Mehrts:

Notice I wasn't specificially referring to you, because a lot of people have the same views for whatever reason that may be. I just find it interesting.

I don't tell people what they should/shouldn't do, simply stating the benefits of something that may have been overlooked.

Fair enough. You will forgive me if I seem a little impatient with people pointing out the joys of smart meters to me. I am well aware of the differences. It is my choice and I have my reasons. That should be the end of the matter.

It might have been the end of the matter if you stated your thoughts on a private Facebook profile. But doing so on public medium where you can't pick and choose your audience. Well.

Your choice might be more limited than you think. It is likely that at some point in the future, your options will be between having a smart meter and continuing to have a power connection, or not having a power connection at all. So while you will still have a choice, it is not a great one. That point in time likely depends on the certification expiry date for your current meter, you can look it up here: https://www.ea.govt.nz/your-power/your-meter/address/

(and hopefully this doesn't come across as confrontational, I'm just trying to be helpful)

No worries I'm not bothered by discussion, just presumption. Thanks for the link but I already have it and I have studied the details. Apparently my meter certification expired in 2022. I guess if it hasn't bothered anyone for the past two years it can't be too big a deal. If it does come up I can just ask to have my meter recertified. There is nothing in the law that says it has to be upgraded, only reasonably accurate.

And as I have made clear, if I have to accept a smart meter, I will. But if I don't, I won't.

Behodar:Back in the 90s the local power company in my area had a choice between flat-rate and peak vs off-peak plans. This was well before smart meters were available. It follows that it must be possible without them!

Just guessing here, but that must have had something to do with ripple control back in the day. The same control used for turning on/off hot water cylinders & nightstore heaters etc.

Yep Ripple controlled smart meter, before we called them smart meters.

I'd expect to have another letter at some point because metering assets have changed hands yet again for some (the retailer doesn't have a whole lot of control over the rollouts either)

I have to wonder if Contact is having a meltdown. They say on their web site that meters are read every other month, with 'estimated' readings in between. I haven't experienced this for a very long time. Nearly all of my readings for the past year or so have been estimates. When I switched to Grey power, I got a first reading from them after a couple weeks but I have never had a final reading from Contact, or a final bill. All I saw was another estimated reading for the month that had finished. Since then crickets. I have now had my first invoice from Grey Power, which is a credit. Contact can't come back to me because there is no way to know what the reading for them was when the switch took place.

Who knows. 18 months ago Vector emailed me about a meter upgrade, then a couple of weeks later asked me to set up an appointment. I never did, and haven't heard a peep out of them since. I suspect they came along and upgraded it when I wasn't home (it's on the side of the house).

On the verandah, in a lawn chair, with a shotgun, keeping an eye out for those damn kids :-).
