sir1963:

We regularly fold down the handles

I would not have learned anything and not had some fun learning

you really need something like spring washers, something to provide tension so it actually clamps.

Spring washers on round surfaces don't work well, and I am curious to see if a LH thread will work. Next will be making some spacers that will fit around the pipe and have a flat surface so I can use a spring washer.

I am just curious to know if the vibrations that cause the left side to loosen will caught it to tighten with a LH thread.

Meantime I did some threading, some knurling, made a tapered end on the knob.
Used a boring bar to make a die holder (which I did not end up needing...DUH me), some end mills, etc expanding my repertoire of things I have used.

@sir1963 It’s clear that cutting the LH threads on the lathe was all part of the fun - but I guess it’s possible to buy LH tap and die sets. Further guess that they would probably be in low demand so would be relatively expensive.

I did use a LH tap and die, my lathe is unable to cut LH threads 😒 but it is all good practice.
I am also building a machinists hammer, copper at one end, nylon at the other.

I don't have a mill, so making the tapped hole in the head for the handle to screw into is a challenge, botched it once (Wrong thread pitch...duh) so I need to make a new head, but again, learning/ improving skills.

Its a Hafco AL-54B, I have yet to fit the DRO to it, I think its better to learn how to use what you have to overcome the issues that it has (backlash etc) will be a better start than the quick and easy route... baby steps.

that sounds very good. i found blondiehacks utube channel which has a lot of good info for beginners with these sorts of lathes.

@sir1963 I’m interested in all this and was keen to see what your lathe looks like. However when I googled Hafco AL-54B I came up with virtually zero hits. Then googling just ‘Hafco lathe’ didn’t really help. Any chance of more info to help with finding it online?

Virtually zero hits means you have a problem. I get quite a few but no longer available this is suggested alternative from https://www.machineryhouse.co.nz/l149

100% watched everything she has done, she is a great explainer, my Sunday morning watch

I also enjoy Cutting Edge Engineering on YouTube , my Friday night watch.

My intent is to buy castings and make small stationary steam engines , one for each of the grandkids.

Its the different skill set from what I do that is the interesting part.
