mdf: I'd check with the manufacturer. I'm guessing here, but the composites I've used are both heavier and flex more than timber. 400 centers might be to address that?
They've said it's OK but will void the warranty, but then see @eracode's reply. I'm also going with the hollow-core rather than solid ones which are a third lighter, so hollow at 450 will still be less load than solid at 400.

The don't actually stock the solid boards anyway, so solid would be a special order. The sales person told be she has never sold any solid.

It's good they've confirmed it's OK at 450, but annoying that it still voids the warranty. If it's OK why does it void the warranty?

As an aside, the guide also says not to install near low e windows because of reflected heat. I queried this (since low e is very common, and will probably soon be standard practise) and no-one at Outdure NZ had heard of any problems caused by this. So I got it in writing from them that this wouldn't void my warranty.

Not sure what you’re saying here. I still think hollow at 450 mm will be fine (sounds like Outdure have corroborated this) but when I said “... when weight is put on it”, I meant load on the deck material, not the weight of the deck material itself. May have misunderstood what you are getting at.

I was replying specifically to @mdf's comments about composites being heavier, since this is hollow-core it's a third lighter.

As for weight on the deck, meaning on the Outdure rather than the deck structure beneath it, there won't be anything apart from very occasional foot traffic.

@neb how big is the deck, and what is it used for if nothing will be on it and will only get occasional foot traffic?

On one side, getting to and from the front door of the house. On the other side, standing on it and looking down and saying "looks like that flower bed needs a bit of weeding". Occasionally "man, these damn mossies are a pain". The deck is about 1.5-2m wide.

How long is it in the other direction? I.e. how many m2?

Can't tell you the exact measurement at the moment because I don't have the plans handy but maybe 10m with breaker boards every 2.4m, the length of the Outdure boards.

Oh, quite long.

They lifted up the remaining bit of the deck today... not so much joists on bearers as rot on top of compost, no wonder that end of the Casa had dropped by about 20mm over the past five years. They're planning to replace it with H4 beams on top of extra piles next week.

On the plus side, I guess you can do your joists at 400 centres now.

It's only a small side part that never gets used except to access the woodshed behind it, the main part with 450 centres has been in place since last year, just covered in old OSB sheets while the rest of the build progresses.

Does anyone have experience with bamboo decking? We are doing a deck soon and are looking at garapa initially but saw a bamboo sample and liked the look of it.

I've been quoted $110+GST per m2. This is priced by square metres rather than linear.

Its tongue and groove and apparantly is easy to lay. https://www.plantationbamboo.co.nz/bamboo-x-treme-decking/

New product to me so only observation is that seems to be limited to 1850 lengths. That is a really short decking board so will have lots of joins. I guess that is the idea behind the end to end tongue and groove? But it would also be quite hard to retrofit to an existing deck without the right joust spacing.

It's OK, I know a guy who can get you jousting sticks at a good price that can fix that. Name's Darryl, lives in Melbourne, close to the airport.

Note that the tongue and groove is in the end joints - not the edges of the boards (which couldn’t work, for obvious reasons).

The Outdure is in and it's amazing, looks about as close as you can get to natural timber but the best thing is I only ever need to wash it down, no more re-oiling every few years watching it go more and more orange each time. Already had two lots of people who came to look say they'll get some as well...
