Lol it was a test to see if you were paying attention. But no, I just park the box there to load the kindling and then move it as it heats up. In this case I got side tracked by my fancy movie making session, but am happy to report I didn't burn the house down.

Phew :p.

We have ours corner mounted like yours. The walls get surprisingly hot.

Sounds like there is a new Mystique without a power unit now. So no fan and downdraft lights.

Masport Cromwell? I can't find any data other than the testing results on the Ecan ULEB listings. https://www.ecan.govt.nz/data/authorised-burners/

My Mystique is having more repairs now. I don't think i'd recommend it. They are reviewing a few things like the bottom chamber intake, bottom chamber entry, the brick density.

Ah, found it in some M10 catalog. It's almost identical to the mystique;

Some grills at the top plate and side bottom plates have been added.

Bottom chamber now has a door handle instead of an allen key entry.

No indicator light. No internal fan.

Flue looks thinner.

Looks like an improvement and a better price too, as having to have it powered was a PITA. I was quote $4999 on the old model, and then they put the price up to $5500, so decided to go with the Akaroa a few months ago, which hasn't yet been installed but is more of a conventional burner, just has a similar vertical look to it.. A pity this one hadn't come out at that stage, as I did ask them if they were bringing but a new generation model. What problems are you having with yours?

Temperature sensor, premature brick wear and possibly a fan failure.

Yeah it's a bit annoying, but the warranty dealer is really friendly and responsive. It's not like the fire doesn't work. My only concern is longevity.

Heatstore in chch have just announced they are selling the blaze king sirocco. i saw it at their show room. it can be banked for 10 hours and is still a uleb wood burner.

What I liked about it is that it has a cook top ( like a free standing wood fire ) and doesn't require electricity to run a fan. It uses a catalytic convertor technology - which only needs replacement every 10 years or so.

In Chch the number of power outages means most ULEBs and pelletfires will be useless unless hooked to a UPS and most don't have cook tops so you are stiff out of luck if you need to cook. This one solves both issues.

i have a Masport wee ped at present but the sirocco would get my vote as replacement model for it when required.

I don't think any of the ULEBs require power to run. They are only downdraft indicators (leds to tell you the temp) and powered fans.

The fans aren't necessary to run.

The number of power outages in Christchurch that I have experienced since returning to NZ in 2008 is one - on September 4, 2010, for around 4 hours. We may also have lost it again on 22/02/2011, however I was out of town (but my house had power when I returned home the next day). Yes lots of people had no power for a lot longer but the earthquakes were pretty extenuating circumstances. There have been no ongoing power outages in the last few years that I am aware of. Unless I am just lucky?

Either way, my Masport Mystique can function perfectly fine without power to the booster fan. It also has a hot plate, but I'd rather cook on my barbecue, as would most people I suspect.

I didn't realize it was a hotplate. It's definitely hot enough. Is it marketed/designed to cook on?

Hmmm, my memory is playing tricks on me. I thought it was designed/marketed as such but a search just now shows no mention of it. The way it's designed looks like you could with no issue. But as I say, I'd much rather use my barbecue anyway.

The big snows in the 90's. Snows since the earthquakes. Several power outages since then. Last weeks lightening storm knocked power to east chch. There are many who had extremely long periods with no access to power after quakes, snow and flooding issues since then. Some parts of town are harder hit than others. Massive lightening strikes 16 years ago ... maybe not a yearly event but often enough that it is a factor to consider.

Power outages end to happen during bad weather so heating is important - not just cooking.

Also my comments would probably resonate with those in the country, places in southland etc who do get more outages - especially when their power is routed to Auckland during some of the coldest weather they ever experienced. if it happened once, it could happen again.

I think the point is that power outages don't matter with these burners anyway.

Hi,

I have been researching the ULEB for my 100 year old home, approx size is 120m2, at present I have 2 decent size heat pumps, double glazing and a HRV system all to get the moisture that builds up in these old houses, as unable to get umderfloor insulation under my house (no space). BTW I live in Christchurch. I was deadset on getting a Masport Mystique ULEB, it looks like this model is soon to be discontinued as there is a new model a Masport Cromwell that has already been released. The good thing with this model it does not have a fan so ok when no power required, where the Mystique can only be used for a few days without power, not sure what happens to it after that time. The Cromwell is cheaper also, which is a plus.

Unless anyone knows something I don't I am going to buy the Cromwell
