This is what is needed to be assisted by a Government.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/homed/housing-affordability/300202986/wait-lists-for-tiny-homes-double-as-house-prices-soar

Not tiny and mass produced cruddy. A subdivision of these won't end up like a slum area. Cool as , efficient as. While a Government doesn't need to give grants for projects like this, it can help with interest free loans to allow the tiny home businesses to ramp up production capability, and get rid of the red tape. Im sure advertising that shows these houses off would get a huge response. Also worthwhile to build for the purpose of renting, lower rent, better yield.

They are houses, not 500 apartments in one rectangular 5 storey concrete block. They are mainly owned. Think of a typical subdivision. A new part suburb of new houses, they just happen to be tiny houses.

Not too far from where I live there's a couple of very new subdivisions with modern small houses on handkerchief size sections with virtually no off street parking. I imagine they wouldn't be much different in concept to what you're talking about if price is an important factor. They have "future slum" written all over them.

Not to mention the downside to having people crammed into tiny spaces with little to no personal space. These don't look much bigger than a decent caravan :)

I'd imagine you don't really "live" in one of these, you survive until something better comes along.

Perhaps an old retired couple could make it work long term..

Like this?  https://www.google.co.nz/maps/place/Yaldhurst+Road,+Christchurch/@-43.5230613,172.5428891,3a,75y,246.6h,88.49t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1smvhCzRMooydQfEgvet85EA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192!4m5!3m4!1s0x6d31f53d8be7393d:0x993844b470be2707!8m2!3d-43.522135!4d172.5399979

Drove past it yesterday, Yaldhurst Rd ChCh, looks more to me like stand alone apartments

We are in a modern subdivision, 10yo home, 283 sq m, over 900 sq m land.  Most subdivisions around us are postage stamp sections. Homes are nice enough but cramped. Thats the way now, dense housing what everyone also about. Dense hosting dense housing thats today's story. Not my ideal home, but they are hardly slums.

A slum is usually a highly populated urban residential area consisting mostly of closely packed, decrepit housing units in a situation of deteriorated or incomplete infrastructure, inhabited primarily by impoverished persons. Wikipedia

Well, they are a common story these days, must be something in it.

I believe slums to be less about construction and house sizes and more about the types of people who are attracted to them and how they behave.

Well, what is needed vs what is ideal... I mean, lots of people world wide live in HD housing, but to be fair, look at HK, most people go to their houses to sleep, they mostly eat out, rarely cook at home, work long hours then socialise..

Not sure that applies here due to the lack of appropriate HD infrastructure and public transport.

I get the feeling we are kicking the can down the road more than solving properly.

Well designed apartment buildings work a bit better in my view.

No, let's build smart. Let's not just knee jerk react to a situation without considering the likely unintended consequences..

That was also my opinion.

Back to tiny houses. Yes they are small, maybe 80 sq m? Doesnt include a garage so you might get a 130 sq m regular home now that is small, that also includes a garage. The tiny houses are designed to be space efficient. Add a large deck, partially covered, be quite liveable IMO. Better than a pokey apartment on the 8th floor overlooking the ANZ Bank, where you are stuck inside.

Like most things in life, horses for courses, but these themes add value to denser housing and affordable housing. And cheaper rents.

Bit more like slight further along the road about 354 Yaldhurst.

I agree definitely not slums now, but they sure have some of the prerequisites.

These houses are smart, they have to be to inhabit smaller spaces. Hardly a knee jerk, many like them, they have to be paid for so they will be owned by financially capable home buyers. As that couple are doing, they wish to establish a village of like minded tiny house owners, a community. I cant really see any unintended consequences.

Never catch me owning an apartment, never. But you can say the same for large homes, small homes, apartments, city, suburbs and rural. Apartments are denser, thats good. Tiny homes allow more ownership, also good. 160sq m homes on 350 sq m sections which seem common now, are also good. They all allow different people to live and own a bit cheaper. Tiny homes are part of that.
