Hi all,

Sorry for the newbie question, but I'm hoping you can help. I'm planning to run a bunch of cabling out to the backroom of my garage (to make it ready for an office / sleep out). I'm totally sorted on the cabling (both cat 6 and RG6), and how to run it out to the garage (inside a 32mm conduit). The thing I'm not clear on is the recommended way of bringing the cables from the outside (and underground) into the side of the garage.

The garage itself is weatherboard, so I was thinking I could essentially use the same approach as what Chorus do with their ETP boxes on the side of houses. If this is a good idea, my next problem is I have no idea where I could source a box like this. Is it something that most electronic stores would sell, or not?

If this is a bad idea, I'd be interested to learn what the recommended advice is!

You can definitely get weatherproof boxes, try Jaycar. I would say you have pretty much the right idea.

I picked one up off trade me for $1 as someone was renovating and was getting rid of it (from the outside at least)

A look for ETP or POE, external termination point or point of entry, on trade me might do the trick

Dont muck around with jaycar and just go straight to your electrical wholesaler. I assume you have 32mm electrical conduit? There are boxes made to fit your pipe. Just go in and ask :)

Edit, just be ready for a price scare though. They are priced ridiculously for what they are. Somewhere around 30-40 bucks for a tiny plastic box.

Electric junction boxes are available from Bunnings. Don't use the Telecom boxes, it needs to look like an electrical junction box so it does not get confused.

A very easy way to get wires through a pipe is a cotton thread tied to a bit of crunched up paper, and suck it through the pipe using a vacuum cleaner. Then use the cotton to pull a rope through, to pull a wire through. A friend did this on 32mm pipe about 30m long with a number of bends in it, took a couple of seconds to do.
