Hi specifically we are in Dunedin

Would you get a specific installer or go to your nearest "mitre 10" for say a pellet fire?

And would you get a wood burner, a pellet fire, or gas fire if you consider
1) cost of installing and cost of fuel

not so important
2) heat output/ cost per kW output
3) environment (really don't care I am cold and I ain't super rich - isnt the latest standards pretty good??)

Yes assuming we have good insulation etc etc the flue goes out the house so we can insulate etc etc

The problem with pellets, is they can be difficult to get, you may only have one supplier, and they are expensive. If you have got a good source of timber, I think a woodburner is the better option. Gas is good if you don't want to be bothered with the mess you can get with burners but can be more expensive, and probably good if you have already got a gas connection.

I got a standard wood burner because...
- No gas line rental in summer -there are no gas appliances in the house.
- Wet backed on the hot water cylinder (well not quite, but nearly).
- I can get free wood.
- I am capable of going and chopping/splitting/stacking wood myself.
- You just can't beat a fire.

I went through the local fire shop to buy the burner but put it all in myself. The info I got from the guys at the shop was priceless though and I wouldn't have been able to do it myself if they weren't as happy to part with information as they were. The same burner was on sale at Mitre 10 for exactly the same price I paid.

And don't forget you will require a Building Consent from your local Council and the installation needs to be inspected and signed off.
Many Councils may not allow you to install yourself these days and will require a certified installer to do the job.
I've had two installs over the last 30 years, one in Dunedin and one in Rotorua.
Both required consents and inspection. The installation requirements are much harsher now than they were back in the 80s. They now have to be bolted to the floor for earthquake protection.
My plumber an I did the first install and the second was done by a professional installer. Both required Council Consent and were signed off at completion.
If you do it yourself and/or you don't have a Building Consent you may find you don't have Insurance cover if your house burns down so it would be a good idea to consult your Insurance Company too.

And yes, IMO wood burners are much better/more economical than gas or electric.

When it comes to the BBQ I'm all for Wood/Coal Weber setup, but for heating my Gas heaters are simply awesome!

The wife loves having the auto start timer fire up 30 minutes before she wakes up and 30min before she comes home for work, something you can't do with wood. It's also near instant heat and makes sense as we already have a gas hob and water.

Sure it doesn't have the same feel as wood, but it's sure simple and quick to use.
