thanks

I am assuming that you will get the new aluminium windows with double glazing, if you are spending the money to upgrade the windows you might as well spend slightly more and actually improve you situation rather than just return to the status quo....

Yes will be getting double glazing not going to all the trouble for new windows only to keep loosing same amount of heat :) Doing windows then going to be doing walls and insulation trying to end up saving money on power bill want to keep heat in house :):)

Try and get windows that have thermal breaks, that is ones that don't have the aluminium continuous to conduct heat through the frame.

+1  Thermacolor windows. The other benefit is you can have a different color on the inside and out.

I would seriously look at PVC rather than aluminum.  Will last longer, looks nicer too.  We have had our whole house done with PVC double-glazing. Amazing.  Check out ThermalFrame.

Badly worded on my part. I meant that they are a better investment over the long-term, less maintenance, hold their look longer, etc..

I think aluminum ones look far better, and they last for a long time. Anododized frames are the ones to go for.  Many houses in the UK have PVC windows and they look terrible IMO, and I don't know how they perform in UV light in NZ conditions long term eg over 50 years. Plastic can break down and discolour from my experience.
Don't know how they are lower maintenance, or hold their look longer. I've seen 40 year old anodised  aluminum windows that are nearly 50 years old and they still look great. The thing that may fail is the seals, but they can be replaced. But I would only recommend aluminum windows with a thermal break. Timber are also good, but higher maintenace involved.

To the op

when you do get some prices let us know, I am looking at getting three timber ones replaced with double glazed alu/pvc and was wondering about prices.

Reason I haven't called up myself is it is in the non-urgent list of a very long list.

Cheers

I think the poster actually meant uPVC which stands for un-plasticised polyvinyl chloride.

I think that was assumed, it's used in other areas of the building industry. uPVC eventually becomes brittle but should be good for 30 years +.
