Just noticed today a new power company in Wellington and Hamilton only: Budgie. Throwing some numbers from my previous Powershop invoices it seems it could be up to $30 cheaper per month.

Anyone ready to report any experience with them?

I would save $10 vs energy online but not sure if Budgie's quote price is taking into account their 25% discount for early payment or not. it must be

Don't really like the ' contact us ' section very little detail if something does go wrong and you need to call them

I also thought the FAQ were missing some key questions about things like the discount etc. I guess they are just getting started

In the FAQ numbers are provided for power faults but what about a billing issue / dispute

You can't log a fault / dispute with the RSP who you are paying this does not seem right

They're in Wellington and Hamilton only, but their address is in Auckland, where they have no service? What?

johnr, they have a whole page about complaints and it mentions billing issues and so on - here.

The most I have ever managed to save on a power bill that averages around $3500 a year is about $170 and frankly it's just not worth the hassle for less than I spend in New World in a week!

Until the companies are forced by legislation to all alter their charges on the same date each year, it will remain a bugger's muddle because what may be cheaper this month might not have gone up for 11 months and might then become more expensive than your old provider the following month because their charges rose 6 months ago.

The amounts involved simply are not big enough to waste the time required to keep checking it and making calls etc etc.

Best savings I got from my power company? when they unilaterally switched me to a smart meter 2+ years ago.

Prior to the smart meter being installed my average monthly power bill during the summer was $80 - $100 month, Winter $100 - $140 month.

Didn't want the smart meter after reading of others having their power bills double once it was installed.

Since it was installed my summer monthly bill is now $60 - $80 a month, winter bill $80- $100 month.
Genesis installing the smart meter saves me $20 - $40 month.

I read about this new brand about a month ago, and from what I read, it has the same postal address as Mighty River Power.

I hadn't gotten around to researching "who" they were owned by yet. No surprises it was a major existing power supplier

What is interesting is they don't have  any phone number, just an email address and PO box. The article is at http://lancewiggs.com/2013/07/21/a-new-power-company-no/

Budgie Power is run by a young man named Andrew and Budgie Power is owned by Bosco Connect also managed by Andrew, it is a small on-seller based in Auckland mainly on-selling electricity to Auckland CBD apartments. They have recently started promotions through  an online competition using film makers to make 30 second ads in the belief there is a total prize pool of 15k. which is currently being investigated due to the changing rules and inconsistencies. The promotion/ competition is their main way of signing up new customers so there appears to be no major financial backing to support conventional marketing practices, they offer no contracts, no real customer support, and seem to be running it all from the Bosco office which operates Monday to Friday until 4.30pm unless they go home early or the office lady takes off to go to the bank and then it is impossible to get through to speak to anyone after 3.50pm

While I'm not with I hope you all switch because they're owned by MRP and I want my shares to go up! :-)

Ironically I've had two doorknockers from other companies in recent months who assured me they could undercut Budgie but when questioned about who they were one admitted they didn't have a clue who they were and when questioned on their pricing were simply told they could undercut Budgie. When I started pushing them further they weren't even close.
