Hi all - we have a heat pump in the main room and it has helped immensely over a oil fin heater.  A no. of the newer houses in Wellington are fitted with central heating.  Are they more expensive to run?  Obviously with most people they may not have heat pumps in every room.  What was apparent to me was that the central heating was basically noise free and it wasn't blowing air out ...

Cheers all.

You can have heat pump driven ducted central heating, it should be a bit quieter. Radiators are quite effective, if your house is well insulated, but of course won't cool the house - though I wonder if running liquid at -50 degrees through them would cool the room...

We had a ducted heat pump installed a month ago and the difference is amazing, the unit is 10kw in 90m2 house and it warms up all the rooms in a little under 20min, We have it set to come on from 6am-6:30am and 8pm-8:30pm and the house is perfect.

90m2 house is good size for ducted central heating.

big houses in a cold area you lose more heat in the ducts than put heat at the end of the ducts i reckon.

don't take my word for it though ...

Yeah I can see that happening but you could put multiple units in if needed and still be cheaper(???) that a radiator type setup

I have a 10kw wall mounted heat pump in my lounge, which heats lounge, dining, and bedrooms, around 90 square meters. It's fine capacity, but ducted would've been a lot more effective at getting heat around corners. It still works pretty hard on really cold days, but it's off or running slowly a lot more than the older 7kw unit was.

We have one heat pump in a 2 story three bedroom house.

It is positioned so that warm air is blown around the lower floor and enough convects up the stairs to cope with Auckland winters.
