Getting new carpet put in downstairs bedroom, does anyone know where you can get cheap or second-hand underlay, don't need anything exorbitant just want some cheap as stuff got given free carpet to use.

Edit, forgot to put location, Dunedin.

Its dusty stuff when second hand and tends to rip at the staples because most people can not be bothered taking care when they lift it up. The trick is to find someone getting a house lot of new carpet and underlay and offer to help them lift the old stuff. Most carpet firms give the buyer the option to lift up the old carpet and underlay to save a few $$$, I know I did. A pair of side cutters used with care are the easiest way I found of pulling the staples out. (The carpet is usually attached around the edges with the smooth edge strips, but the carpet layers go mad with a staple gun laying underlay, well they did at my house.) The rubber back underlay is most common and least messy. Good luck with that.

Underlay's not that expensive. Alternately try a carpet firm, they may be able to send some old stuff your way.

underlay is pretty cheap @ $4/m2 - and well worth it in terms of how the carpet will feel to walk across....

Yeah, If i was doing an important room I would get new stuff, But it is just a storage room really, went into carpet court and they sorted me out with some good offcuts from a new carpet going down in a student hall in Dunedin thanks for help guys :)

You know I'd often wondered about laying new carpet over the top of old.
In my present case the old is not bad, it's just discoloured. Long term you wouldn't want the bottom lifting or forming creases etc, which would create nasty lumps underneath.

also is it ok to put in new carpet before we get new gib board in?, getting new windows next year and wondering if should wait to carpet bedroom?

I'd wait - I assume the new gib will be going to floor level, with new skirting board. If the carpet is laid up to the current skirting board, you need to work around it when installing the replacement. Plus, gib and stop and paint and etc all over new carpet, even being careful.

No matter how careful people are the carpet will get stuff on it, even if it's just dust. Re gibbing is incredibly messy, we did a room earlier this year, it looked like a bomb site. Carpet last, always. If the carpet goes down before you'd probably want to take it up before you jib.

Yeah I was thinking about getting carpet done last, but we have them up doing 2 rooms today and tomorrow, thinking of ways to save money :) could get carpet done and then get gibbing done, ask them to use plastic sheet over carpet?

Trademen are never as careful as you'd like. Having carpet people back wouldn't cost that much extra would it? They can often fit small jobs in.

It is costing us about 300$ for 2 rooms was talking to them about it today said about 25-50 more for extra room to be done
