Hey there

We are in the market for a new 60cm wall oven priced around $1500 and wondered if there were any recommendations of brands, models or retailers to either avoid or try.

So far we are leaning towards Westinghouse as a brand followed maybe by F&P. We don't need lots of flash functionality more reliability and durability as it is destined for life in a rental property kitchen at some stage.


Thanks in advance for any suggestions and comments.

I wouldn't install an F&P appliance if they supplied it for free. My parents always bought F&P appliances and all the recent ones had serious issues.
- Range, bottom oven element never worked, didn't work it out for a long time, just thought it was a crap oven.
- Fridge, failed inside 12 months, it's replacement failed within weeks, and the next one inside 12 months.
- Upright freezer, failed inside 12 months.
- Chest freezer, failed inside 2 years.

As for a good one, no idea.

Westinghouse or maybe an entry level Bosch?
As someone with a broken oven at the moment, I wouldn't want to go cheap and risk reliability issues in the future - it's a real PITA!

Can recommend Westinghouse.  We were in the market for one just over a year ago, and ended up getting the POR668S model.  The current RRP of this model is more than your budget at $1900, but if you're lucky enough with any sales, it could end up in the same price range (we got ours on sale - can't recall price though).

Other than the obvious ability for an oven to actually cook food properly and evenly, two of the key things we looked for were:
- triple-glazing on the door (the more layers the better, especially if young kids are ever around it)
- internal capacity (some rate by external size, which is misleading - again, the bigger the better)

On the last item, our previous oven (a Smeg) had the same external size, but the internal size was tiny - standard size baking trays would have to sit on the rails on the side of the oven, rather than on the wire racks they were supposed to!

Their POR667S model is currently in the price-range you're looking at, and has the same internal size, but is only two-layers of glass on the door, and doesn't have quite so many cooking options.  However, if it will eventually end up in a rental at some point, it may well suffice.  Both these models are currently well-rated by Consumer too.

We ended up going for a Beko oven when we did our kitchen last year. One of the main reasons was the large internal volume and the controls / display are extremely intuitive. We bought an OIM22501 for around $900 and to be honest the only features it didn't have were pyrolitic liners and quad glass on the door.

We've been very happy with it and would be happy to recommend the oven. It works really well and is very simple to use.

Friends of ours have recently installed a Parmco range (oven + cook top) and they are very happy with it. It is also cheap.

I also know of a workplace that replaced a Bosch dishwasher with a Parmco. Any time the Bosch needed repairing the minimum cost was about half the cost of a new Parmco. The Parmco has been working perfectly for them.

I've also heard good reports about Parmco - specifically from people owning rental units who don't like to spend a fortune on outlay, nor have to deal with servicing issues.

Eventually I will be getting a new oven of the same size when i re-do the kitchen so this is interesting.

One thing i did note, was making sure my current pans, trays will fit the new oven. Be sure to take some in when you decide on one to confirm that it will fit.

Ovens these days use a Litre sizing system, there are big differences between 60cm ovens in terms of their internal space, some look smaller than microwaves!!

make sure you get telescopic rails, at least one set, and a self cleaning feature.

We installed our new wall oven late October.

An Electrolux EVE623SA - Stainless steel 60cm mutifunction 12/6 duo oven with Intuitive Oven Interface control system and telescopic runners.

My F&P stuff is 6 years old. The fridge is going fine, but starting to make some slightly odd noises occasionally. The drier has beenr repaired 3-4 times. The washing machine blocked once from fabric softener. Overall I consider them decent, not great.

My Bosch dishwasher is awesome, only a year old but no issues at all. I'll probably buy Bosch everything from now on. Their power tools are good for handymen too, probably not near trade level though.

We inherited a 12 month old 60cm Parmco when we bought our house.

Functionality-wise it is "ok", but it has proven less than reliable with repeated problems in the switches.

Granted, it has been repaired with reasonable grace (and somewhat less haste) under the 5 year warranty, but with its current track record I probably wouldn't hurry to buy another.

Been more than happy with our Westinghouse (just rebadged Electrolux I believe?) Fridge, but as it is barely a year old that is faint praise at the moment.

More then happy with the Electrolux 1 & 1/2 oven we brought last year. If you're in Auckland, go to the Noel Leeming clearance centre - they sell the factory 2nds etc there, and we got our oven for more then $1000 off retail - with the only issue having been that the door had been smashed (and thus replaced) in transit! The advantage of the Westinghouse/Electrolux is that they both have a larger capacity (~72L as opposed to 60L or less) - we can definitely cook more in the oven then with the previous oven.

Parmco... I'd potentially buy one of their range hoods, and that's it. Not something as important as an oven.

Our old oven (yes, not new, but look at the principal as the design has not changed) failed with the oven thermostat stuck on while my wife was asleep and the kitchen door closed. Fortunately the fire alarm woke her up and when she entered the air was shimmering from the heat. Glad it was free standing.

With a new oven you hope the quality control is there that e.g. the insulation in the wiring is not substituted with non-compliant materials. Also keep in mind oven design has virtually changed nothing over the years, not like fridges where frost-free defrost cycles and energy efficiency requirements required technology to be thrown at it, so not much electronics difference between brands. And also appliances are type tested which means a couple of samples are compliance tested before entering the market for the first time, thereafter cosmetic changes can be made to release "new" models as long as the buttons and wiring is in the same place. So a 2014 new model oven could in fact be a 20 year old design which has never been compliance tested again.

Even if it is an old house which you don't care if it burns down as you have insurance, a few hundred dollars for a good brand name stove (or more expensive repairs) is nothing compared to the loss of rental income for a year while the house gets rebuilt.

I'd look at Bosch/Westinghouse and a couple other good brands. Not Smeg, it is just a name and nothing more (speaking from experience).
