Anyone come across this phenomena.? We moved a rimu chest in our lounge in prep for new carpet laying and noticed a large brown stain on the existing carpet where the chest was. To be honest we haven't moved the chest in at least 4 years and the carpet has rubber underlay (that wavy sort) and then concrete.

I read online that overseas furniture stains do occur on carpet but I have never seen it here.

Anyone else have this?

Was the chest varnished or had a wood stain put on it? My guess is that it's been absorbed by the carpet over time. I don't know how that stuff works but maybe if it got particularly hot and sweats/melts a bit of the varnish off, it might do that?

Did the stain follow the chest? Or does it have a more spilled look to it?

Where in your lounge was the chest? Near a window or corner?

Does the stain smell?

I'm going to noob myself past judgement

Chest was varnished I think but base looks stained . We kept it under the window in a corner out of the way.

Stain feels slightly damp but does seem to smell

What does it smell like? Varnish? Rotten? Or just a base damp fabric smell?

If it is damp i would doubt that the stain is just from the chest

my thoughts are that just the humidity of the air might of been enough to very slowly liquefy the stain and then it is able to get into the carpet.

may i suggest that you have it raised up so that there's about a 1cm-1inch air gap just to allow some amount of airflow underneath (for drying) so it wont happen to your new carpet? (a few cork coasters or similar under each corner should be fine to raise it)

Smells musty and damp. Some interesting thoughts from the posters - especially around slow liquify. I am not worried as t the old carpet is going but good to know reasons.

The stain from your chest will have been drawn into the carpet because of the damp. Before you replace the carpet, you need to figure out where that's coming from, or the new carpet will also be ruined.
