We need to get our power and gas connected (gas water and cooking).

Seems every company wants to lock you into a 24 month contract. Is that normal?

We were contemplating between trustpower and nova.

Energy Online is a retail arm of Genesis which you are more likely to have heard of.

The Powerswitch site doesn't cover gas prices so you should calculate the comparative cost yourself. You might find another retailer with higher electricity prices but lower gas prices and more favourable terms.

Energy Online have a 20% prompt payment discount which is factored into the saving calculation so if you have issues paying on time then you could lose much of the estimated saving.

Check out Energy Direct, they are cheap, im with them and so far no power company have managed to beat their prices.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

try http://www.switchme.co.nz/ As it also does gas. Also it doesn't try to guess your yearly usage like what the powerswitch and whats my number sites do.
