Our F&P gas (LPG) cooktop has driven us crazy for years. The thermocouple keeps going on various burners and we've had it repaired a number of times. We want to replace it but the cutout size is so big I can't find anything to drop in (was wanting a Bosche). It's in a stainless benchtop.

How can we reduce the cutout size to get a new cooktop to fit? Can the installer do it and how is it done?

What is the cutout size of the current one? The only way you can reduce the cutout size without it being obvious that that has been done. Is to remove the whole benchtop and take it to a company that does stainless steel welding.

Would you consider replacing it with a larger cooktop?

It is much easier and tidier to make the cutout bigger.

Without changing the bench or getting a piece welded in you could get a s/s plate made big enough to cover the old hole and with the new cut out in it (basically an adapter plate).
Get the stainless with a bevelled edge and silicon it over the old hole (put something heavy on top to hold it down overnight)

I would recommend getting a new cooktop that fits into the existing hole as the above would look like a bit of a patch job.

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

This is what we' ve decided to do (a plate, but we'll let gravity hold it under there).
There simply does not seem to be a model big enough to fit over the old cutout.
The width of the current cutout is approx. 520 mm, which seems to be the max outward size of the units I've looked at so far. The length is 890.

I'm going to get hubby to re measure to the nearest mm since he tells me it was approximate. If we even have a bit of a lip I can get him the double wok Bosch unit I think he'll really like.

Then we'll have to move the rangehood further up the wall as the Bosch cooktop requires a lot more vertical clearance.

Are those vertical clearance measurements recommendations or gospel?

You could always get one of these http://ilve.com.au/wp-content/uploads/brochures/HP965FD.pdf It will easily cover the existing hole as it is 900 X 650mm. Hate to think how much it would cost though. Also due to it's height. You would probably find it easier to just cut out a section of the benchtop. And sit it directly on top of the cabinets. As for rangehood height. It needs to be a min of 750mm above the cooking surface (tops of the pan supports). And if the hob has a built in BBQ grill or Lava rock grill (where the food is directly exposed to the flames). Then an even bigger clearance is required. And if the manufacturer specifies a different clearance - then that over rules the above.

Cheers for the advice, we'll be moving the rangehood upwards to the manufacturer's spec.
