My house is quite small and it's only my wife and I that live in it. We have one bathroom and kitchen.

What size Rinnai Gas Infinity unit would suit?

Cheers

The infinity 24 will most likely be OK for you. But if you live somewhere that gets really cold then you want a bigger unit. As the badge flow ratings are based on a 25deg temp rise between inlet and outlet water temp. So if the incoming water temp is only 5deg. Then you will have a 50 deg temp rise meaning an infinity 24 will only supply 12L/min max. If you try to draw more flow than what the unit can provide. A built in electronic flow control valve limits the flow, To maintain a stable outlet temp.

Measure how much flow you can get from your cold taps. And then decide if you want the same flow from the hot. Also will you only ever have 1 hot tap on at a time? Or will you have multiple hot taps running at the same time?

I live in Lower Hutt so it does get a bit cold in winter, some mornings can go as low as 1 or 2 degrees. I think we would only have the temperature on 42 or something for the shower though.

As for multiple taps, we currently can't run hot water in the bathroom and kitchen simultaneously due to having an old gas cylinder so really not fussed.

Sounds like the 24 will be fine for you.

Wife and i have a 24. Have had an extra 2 - 4 staying and it was fine. You probably don't want the washing machine doing a hot wash when you are having a shower, but how often would you try doing that?

Pretty much never.

Sounds like VT24 is the go.

Is there a home and garden show coming near you anytime soon as they always have a special where they give you the 27 foe the price of the 24.  You could even mention it when you buy it to see if they will do the same deal.

When we installed ours (Bosch, not Rinnai, but basically the same), the price difference between the units was so small that there was no point in *not* going for the 26L/min unit.

It was basically $200 to move from the 21L to the 26L. Even in a smaller house it's probably worth doing, just to ensure that the stability of the hot water is fine if you have multiple taps running at the same time as a shower for example.

For reference the whole job was around $3k, the unit itself was $1400 plus Bosch were doing a cashback deal.

Oh - and I would strongly recommend getting a controller unit. Especially with a smaller household - set for 40c and 150L and fill a bath. Or set for 40c and turn shower to hottest, and away you go. It's fantastic - much better with a controller.

Thanks for the advice. I think our installation will be quite expensive due to the current pipes not being large enough to supply Gas Infinity, we were quoted ~3000 + GST for the unit + install though.

$3k seems very expensive for the unit. I also payed about $1500 for my 27L unit. + install. Total came to about $3k.

Unit and install, not just the unit. after GST it would be $3450 total.
