As above - anyone know the cheapest/best place in Auckland to buy decking screws?

I'm looking at the torx head, probably 12g x 65mm.

Or maybe somewhere online??

I've used superscrews.co.nz a couple of times and they seem to offer a pretty good service. Although they owe me for shipping on the last order since they double charged me when I added something.

I got some fastners off a trademe seller on college road northcote a few years back. Sharpest local price I could find, he imported them himself for sale on there.

I dont have the details for that guy now, but there are many sellers on trademe who are selling box lots of stainless fastners.

If you dont need them in a hurry there is always aliexpress, but when I was pricing up nuts and bolts the costs were higher than the trademe local sellers because of freight being heaps on the to come by air, whereas I assume the ones on trademe came by boat on a pallet.

The standard discount I get at Blacks is 60%. If they won't come to the party for a retail customer, I recommend talking to EDL, who's reps in store seem to be able to haggle a deal. Also decking timber suppliers will often sell fasteners as part of their system. I bought about 2,500 (sold by the kg so not exact) SS #12x65 bugle head (4mm hex drive) from Herman Pacific, back calculating, trade price was about $0.27 each (incl GST). In that case I was somewhat committed to using the screws supplied by the timber supplier, as they specify the fasteners to be used, using something different may have warranty implications.

Our company moved away from EDL (for stainless fasteners) because of low quality formed heads (offset to shaft) and screwing up orders (excuse the pun). Our company is one of the largest NZ exporting manufacturers of electronic products, so a big customer. For stainless we go to Anzor. I live close to the East Tamaki store and use them for personal stuff as well, and constantly there are people coming in for one-of purchases. Anzor has no issue with that, and the staff (at that branch) is friendly.

I used to have an account at EDL for a small home business I had. Closed it a few years ago, then months later got a letter about a special for account holders. Contacted the sales manager and he assured me that he will close my account. A year later I got another letter for account holders, this time to inform me of a price increase. I give up.

To the thread author: I'd go for the highest grade of SS if I were you. I live in Palmerston North (40 km inland from the sea) and I've noticed that items made of 304 grade SS still develop corrosion over time.

316 is marine grade SS, if you can get screws in this grade I'd advise it.

Cheers for the help everybody. Turns out Trademe gives the best prices. After consulting with a builder mate on the sizing required I've gone with 316SS 8g x 65mm. By all accounts 316 will last longer than 304. Have bought them from Handy Warehouse trademe store for $139 for 1000x.

304 isn't as resistant to "tea staining" as 316 but is more wear resistant and stronger. That may be more important for a fastener than cosmetic appearance. What ever you pick do a few test screw ups to check that the heads don't twist off with your torque settings.
