I bought a bunch of R80 LED bulbs from Aliexpress a few months ago. Had to buy 10 and they are all brilliant. MUCH better quality than most things I have bought from China. They all worked, all fit well and all give even light.

Unfortunately when I went to order some more recently I couldn't find the same reseller or the same model - but Chinese bargains are out there. They ended up costing me about $9 NZD each, landed.

Cheers - N

I've been looking too.

The cheapest I've seen in the shops is this "Click" twin pack 6W 3000k bayonet at Bunnings for $11.90
http://www.bunnings.co.nz/click-led-bulb-6w-a55-bc-2pk-warm-white_p04331095

They are only 6W so equiv to a 40W incandescent, which should suit me as I want to use them in lamps rather than fixtures.

Where were you going to buy the Panasonic ones from, Countdown? The LED prices I've seen from Countdown have always been much higher than from New World.

Be very careful before buying LEDs that aren't from big brands like Panasonic, Philips, Cree and Osram as the quality often isn't there.

Most LEDs aren't made to work in enclosed spaces so if you have screw bulb enclosures like R80s the lifespan of the LED will be reduced by overheating unless it is a model that was specifically designed for it.

PB Tech appear to have some good prices on the Panasonic LED bulbs: http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=c&p=ledlighting

You would need to get them instore. At one stage they had really good prices on some of the older models, as more energy efficient ones had come out. They are a technology that are improving.

I think I had them knocking on my door wanting to do an inhome assessment of my lighting. I told them I already had LED lights and they were a bit on the pushy side, saying it was a free assessment etc.

$35 per bulb!

Bunnings "Click" 6W bulb for $5.95 still looks like the cheapest

5W Panasonic from PBtech for $9.53 looks pretty good for a branded product http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=p&p=BULPAN118040&name=Panasonic-5W-B22-Bayonet-Daylight-350-lm-LED-Bulb-

I would stick to the top brands like philips and panasonic. You pay a bit more initially, but they seem to  last. I haven't had a single one fail and mine have been installed for a couple of years. 5 W is a bit weak, although depends on the lighting needed. I did buy a few cheap house brand LEDs from warehouse when they were selling them off for around $5 each, and they have been in for about a year with no problems but they look to be an older looking bulb with ribbed heat sink on the side rather than the plastic now used.

There is only mention of price and not of CRI (Colour rendering index). To me it would be important to get good light as well as to save money on electricity when changing to LED bulbs.

More info on CRI (Wiki) and Philips on CRI

Does any of the LED bulbs that have been discussed already state their CRI?

It is the lumins you should be comparing it too rather than the wattage. Philps now do a 14 W, which is  1400 lumins . A 150w incandesent is probably over 2000 watts, but the light from that is scattered in all directions. I think over time brighter LEDs will be released. I think the heat they produce is a problem. In the US they have a new cheaper range which are horseshoe shaped with a better heat sink and supposed to be cheaper , as they are cheaper to make.
