Hi folks.  Have been using Dulux 1 step acrylic Primer / Sealer / Undercoat on recent renovations - mainly plasterboard and taped/ stopped joins. I then plan to use a water based acrylic on top.

I've been told by a large chain retailer that I need to use the oild based 1 step primer / sealer /undercoat for the bathroom walls and roof prior to my topcoat.   However on the can it says we should also use an oil based topcoat which I don't want to do. I want to use an acrylic kitchen and bathroom paint.

I pointed this out to the salesguy and he 'thought' we could use the water based acrylic on top of 1 step oil primer.  He went away and asked somebody else and they also ' thought' we could use it but weren't absolutely sure.

Any painters or knowledgeable folks on here can help?  IF the topcoat - bathroom acrylic stops moisture ingress then does it really matter if the undercoat is oil or water based?

Thanks for your help

Ged

Back when I was selling paint 7-8 years ago it was an oil based pigmented sealer base coat, then an acrylic enamel or oil based enamel on top. Never a water based sealer. If it's aqualine gib like it should be, then I'm pretty sure there arn't any waterbased products that stick to that properly.

Yes it smells horrible, and don't be tempted to put a top coat on until it's dry, which means keeping the room above 16 degrees, with the window open so it's well ventilated. If it still smells a lot then it probably isn't dry yet.
