My sparky is in the middle of replacing my hot water element, but it won't be done until tomorrow.

The cylinder is currently empty, and I'm not sure if I should light my fire tonight - is it bad to do so if there is no water in the wetback pipes or cylinder?

Yes don't do it!

It has a decent chance of damaging the wetback

Agree. It will definitely burn out the Wetback. And in extreme cases it can even set the house on fire. Can't understand why the sparky would need to remove the old element. When he doesn't yet have the new one. Especially as you could have still used the fire and you would have had hot water from the Wetback.

+1000 , you will melt pipes, welds and do all sorts of nasty things running it' without water,

Would you run your car if the radiator was empty? Same principle ...

Thanks gents, as it turns out he did have the right replacement element buried deep at the back of his van, so the cylinder is all back in one piece and refilled now.
