Hi,

I'm in the need in renting a storage unit for a year or two. The main requirements would be to be quite dry and reasonably secure.
Closer to Auckland CBD would be preferred but if it's significantly cheaper I wouldn't mind 30-40km away.

Any recommendations, tips & tricks, do/don't? I'm not sure about the size at this stage though, it can be either something quite small like 2x2x2 metres or something larger like a 3x3x3 metres?

I'd hazard a guess that most prices around Auckland will be about the same.

We had a locker in the Storage place at St Lukes (Wagener Place) and it was fine. Clean, dry and easy to access. 2x3m about $220 a month. I see on their website, the Botany one is slightly cheaper, being further out, so it might pay to ring around.

Storage King, and I think unit was about 2.2m

Actually $220/month is not bad at all for a unit this large.

Let your insurance company know that you're storing your possessions in there and exactly what you're storing.

Thanks. I spoke to them and apparently they only insure for 6 months, afterwards it gets tricky as they want a nominated person that goes and checks everything once a month or so.

I did notice that National Mini Storage have a separate insurance policy which is not that expensive compared to the one I currently have so it's definitely something to consider.

I have a builder friend who's rented a unit at the Miro Pl, Albany, National Mini storage for a couple of years now. He let his leased yard go & stores all his less used tools, scaffolding, boxes of fasteners etc in there.

Access is easy, anytime, just off the motorway, uses a code to get in. Prepays yearly for a discount. Says he'd recommend them.

He has cleverly Tetris'd an incredible amount of stuff into the small unit by using modular shelving. Can pull any of it out via a little path he's left down the middle.

There is a naitonal mini storage right in town at the end of Stanly Street, otherwise another one in Penrose with <10 minutes drives from the CBD without traffic

Yep, best to get your insurance sorted. I remember after that guy in Wellington torched a large block of storage units, many people who thought they were covered found their insurance companies weaseled out of paying, as they do.
