Anyone ever used those carpet cleaners you can hire at most supermarkets, Bunnings etc?

Rather than clean out the whole house at once for a pro to come in, the idea of doing it perhaps a room or two at a time appeals to minimize inconvenience.

No specific problems, just think some areas need a freshen up after years of kids.  It is a large (?) house (about 180 m2 of carpet) but knocking it off a bit at a time feels entirely doable.  On-line search seems mostly positive.   Any feedback on these machines and any hints/tips appreciated.

Pro's seem to all want to do the whole job all at once, and the daily deals all look good at first but the price quickly increases when they find out area needed.  I didn't think it was too far away from normal these days, but the carpet cleaners all seem to think the average 3 bedroom house is something like 80 m2, and base their advertised prices on that.  A little disingenuous I think.

Thanks

Weve used the Rug Doctors a few times, and they do a reasonable job for the money. Just be aware that the damn things have to be super clean when you return them...... had a manager complain once because there was a bit of hair or something in one we returned....had hell of a lot more than just hair in it when we picked it up :)

Professionals get the carpet cleaner and leave it drier. If you have nice carpet I'd pay a professional who uses good quality, well maintained equipment rather than doing it youserlf.

I used a Rug Doctor a few years ago. Less than impressed.
I feel that their advertising is a bit misleading. They never actually say it's a steam cleaner but when their slogan is 'steaming mad at dirt' it could give you that impression.
It just sprays the water/shampoo on the carpet and then vacuums it back out. It probably does a better job then a normal vacuum but leaves the carpet pretty damp.
Next time I would try to get a proper steam cleaner.

I've use both the Rug doctor and the Bissell Big Green.

While both do a pretty good job and make a massive difference compared to normal vacuuming I found the Bissell Big Green so much better than the Rug Doctor.

Pro's for Bissell Big Green:
Cleans in both directions(twice as fast), Rug doctor only cleans backwards
Carpet left drier
Cleaned better(personal opinion, the result just seemed better)
Used way less carpet shampoo - The rug doctor seemed to eat through shampoo

The Rug Doctor seems available everywhere, I've only seen the Bissell Big Green at the Warehouse

I've got a Bissell that must be close to ten years old, there are probably better units out there but it has more than paid for itself time and time again, It has done whole houses, spot cleaning, refresh rooms, everything inbetween, If/when it dies i will buy a replacement one simple as that, well worth it!

the one that worked best was one with super high pressure and blasts all the crap out of the carpet. never seen that used in NZ

We did our whole house in 2 days.

Old (80s) carpet - it definitely came up cleaner and lightened some stains, so we are happy with the results for the money.

If it was new carpet I'd pay someone to do it.

We cleaned our old carpet about twice a year when the kids were younger.  Used the rug doctors and found them really good.  I'd go the Warehouse green one if I did it again though.

You can see the dirty water when you empty it, so you know it's doing something.

Others might be better, I expect professionals to do a better job, but the price of the rug doctor and the results were right for us.

Pick a dry sunny and windy day and start early in the morning.
Expect to run a dehumidifier that night also.
I'd suggest the above even if you go professional.

id rate the bissell big green over the rug doctor, cleans better and in both directions and its also easier to clean the unit after

I cleaned 1x car, and a 100sqm house in a day, didnt move all the furniture though

I have lived in my house since I was 16 and had about 20 flatmates over the last 10 years.
We rug doctor the whole house every 6 months - its quite good at getting spilled beer and RTD's out of the carpet from the friday night parties.

Its not awesome - like it wont make the carpet 100% new again but it does get alot out of the carpet.
Yes it does leave the carpet quite moist - the HRV system on high with all the windows and doors closed, except the bathroom is quite good at drying it out on a sunny day.

I do have to say I am quite impressed with how much it gets out and it brings the carpet up to a nice standard so a new flatmate can move in.
