So I managed to get my hands on a second hand stove from Trademe. I need to install it at my rental property. Just wondering if i need a sparky to get this done or can I manage to do this myself?

It is one of those old school free standing ones with the electric elements.

What kind of stove fitting does the house have? What kind of fitting does the stove have? If they match you can just plug it in. If you have to for example screw the wires into the stove then you could probably do it yourself, but should you, and can you legally? Someone else will know.

Looked pretty simple when the electrician did it recently for me.

I would be getting a sparky to check it out anyway , don't think I would trust a second hand oven off TM without getting it checked. If its ok then he can wire it in for you at least you would then have peace of mind.

Disclaimer: I am not a sparky!

If it's a rental property, pretty sure you can't do any DIY with the electrical. So unless the unit is a plug in type and you have the correct socket already installed, you'll need a sparky.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

If the oven is on a plug AND there is an existing socket you can do it yourself.

if there is ANY form of fixed wireing this must be done by a registered electricaln or electrical serviceperson with the correct licence endorsment ( EST-B for example )

You can only do limited fixed wireing in a house that you own and ocuppy so your rental property does not meet the requirements.

ahh. i was hoping to avoid additional costs... i will see how much a sparky would install it for me.. i got one quote for almost 500 bucks (he was saying a new fuse, a new connection to the box etc). The stove itself was 150 bucks, just need to replace the stove that is there.

There are a couple of questions you need to ask

1) are you living in the house - if yes then you can DIY, if no you need a electrician
2) will you get any money for the install of the oven? no - you can DIY, yes (Rental income) you need a sparky

It's a bit of a snowball effect, when the work is done it must meet the regulations currently in force, which most likely will be the install of a plug and socket, making the wiring big enough to carry the power of a newer oven, and the replacement of fuse with a circuit breaker.

It's not quite as simple as throwing in a 2nd hand stove and it's all good.

As a landlord it's there provision to claim some of the expenses of doing this against tax?

and BTW I am a sparky

Ahh i see. Well, the current stove's oven was not working, so i pretty much picked out something similar (but newer) from trademe. I asked a couple of guys to have a look at the stove and see if they can get the oven to work, they were saying it might cost more than 100 bucks or so - thought might as well replace the stove/oven.

I dont think there would be much difference in the amount of power required for the new stove, so didnt think the wiring would need replacing.

Are you auckland based? How much would you charge for something like this?

Ok, this gets awkward.

You can legally do a certain amount of work on your own home, i.e. the one you live in, such as changing a light switch. Any additional wiring
would need to be checked by a registered electrical inspector before it can be connected and livened.

HOWEVER, you may find doing any electrical work yourself negates your home insurance policy.

A Rental property gets awkward, in theory you would be doing electrical work for financial reward (the rent), that makes it illegal for you to do the work.

However, my advice for all electrical work is toe get a competent electrician to do the work.
This will give you a certificate of compliance and also have the used stove electrically tested to ensure it is complaint.
