Hi,

Random topic... I've moved to a different suberb, been here 6 months. Everything is how we love it really nice... except one neighbour that we back into.
They have 3 sons who are probably 18-24 years old? The parents seem to go away a lot in the weekends and also strike me as very very relaxed about how their sons operate, I don't think they care.... (they are just having fun...)

For the last 3 weeks we have music almost daily from about midday, its not loud loud but certainly dominates our back yard as their back yard is straight against ours...

Thats tolerable....

The thing that annoys me is they drink lots and then their language and volume changes - every sentence contains the F bomb, the C bomb.. and it goes on and on and on.
i have a 6 year old son who can hear it all, my mother is disgusted.... she is old school and thinks they all need a kick in the ass..

I want to stay on the good side of my neighbours and wonder whether I should make an issue of things or just pray given their age they will move out soon...

ideas?

They will be there for years. You could try a polite conversation, or call noise control.

Got neighbours like that as a matter of fact they are at it now, Starts Wednesday ends Sunday. Neighbour behind them tends to get his water blaster and weed wacker out every Sunday morning about 7am and cleans up the same portion of drive way which coincidentally backs right up to 3 bedrooms of the offending house. Doesn't bother me as my room is on the opposite side.

We've got an opera singer one house down.. it can be a nuisance but at least it's not foul language or anti-social behaviour :)

Go over and have a word with them, be polite, hell go with your son, chances are they don't realise their actions are affecting others. It won't be a silver bullet and they won't change overnight but most people are reasonable even teenagers believe it or not.

Now if they don't change

How's your water pressure? I had some friends that owned a house with one of those walkways that go between cul de sacs (so pedestrians can wander through) behind their fence. They used to get people smoking, drinking and tagging in it at all hours. So they simply turned the sprinkler on each evening at the same time and left it on. It very conveniently just sprayed over the fence.

Might be a bit tougher if you're in Auckland with metered water.

Go and talk to them about your concerns. I am not sure why it should be anymore difficult than that.

What do I accept? My requirements in this respect will be abnormal compared to most.

Ideally I expect never to hear them. We have neighbours on 3 sides. The nearest would be at least 250 metres to their boundary from our house and the lady lives on her own and is away all week. She hardly makes a noise although her pig escapes sometimes.

On the other side it's further - perhaps 800 m to their house - and all I ever hear are the occasional sounds of a tennis game, occasional laughter if they are hosting guests for dinner and their Aston Martin roaring past on the road.

The ones at the back are over 1500 metres away - I can neither see nor hear them from the house. We are fortunate in that all our neighbours are well over 50 and have no children living at home.

The most intrusive thing we get is either machinery working on the vineyards, aerial spraying, helicopters flying frost control missions all night over the vineyards or chainsaws as the folk who have yet to consign open fires to the 19th century get ready for winter!

I simply couldn't cope with urban living. I think I would either have a nervous breakdown or worse.

You could borrow a loud dog...! Maybe that would make them find somewhere else to make a nuisance of themselves?

We have 15 flats next to us with their driveway between them and our bedroom window. Not so bad now as private renting only now. Previously it was housing NZ tenants (weirdos, drunks and people yelling). Peace has come to our neighbourhood (apart from the occasional yells during the day from the psych ward yard at Hutt Hospital) :-)

I live in Auckland CBD and neighbors are a real pain point for me at the moment.

We have a neighbor upstairs who feels its appropriate to thump around late at night (10.30pm-well into the morning), AND have decided that smoking weed frequently is all okay.
We have to leave our ranch slider open all day, as there is no air conditioning (also renting) and no opening windows in the bedroom (I know, missed that one when moving in). So the smoke flows directly in our apartment.

I've tried talking to the building manager and knocking on their door to talk to them, but the building manager has done nothing and the tenants refuse to answer the door (I can hear them shuffling around behind their door, presumably looking through the peep hole)

We're in an apartment block- I think it's pretty reasonable to expect that you follow a more courteous rulebook since it is such close living. But nope. There's always some A hole there to ruin it for people.

I know this is off-topic to what was being asked here, but I saw red with the mention of neighbors!

And the building trade appear incapable of decent noise insulation which does not help!

This one I'd call the police on. You've asked them reasonably, they refuse to be reasonable, therefore they get what they deserve.
