Dear All,

Contemplating an electric car so thought I'd look into the quality of the power supply to my garage.

I live in a 1920's villa which had a garage built in the early 1970's according to the LIM paperwork.

At the moment I only have a 1.8m verticle freezer running regularly; the electric garage roller door and the driveway automatic gates are the only other electric devices wired in.

The is a fusebox with reset buttons labelled 15 (Blue x2) and one 5 (White) with NZI Cat 303. Exposed cabling looks pretty thick white with three components.

I'll attach pictures of these.

So my question is would I be able to get an electrician to place a caravan plug put in which draws 16A.

?Does a box with 15Ax2 and 5Ax1 imply that I can draw more than 16A from the switchbox that is in my house if an electrician rewires the garage?

?I'm assuming the max amp I can draw into the garage isnt just under 35A ?

A.

(in a perfect world I'm thinking of putting the 16A plug on our fence which has the cable running along it to the gate at the front of the property.)

It's all going to depend on the thickness and length of the wire from the house as to what it can do. I'm unlucky enough to have 4mm cable to mine so no use for anything more than 20A for the entire building. Am putting 6mm in to the sisters place but that will only be 25 because of length. With a tesla coming soon, its tempting to pull out what has been put in so far and get something huge for it.

What size circuit breaker is on the cable feeding the garage switch board?

Question not suggestion: If you have 2-phase for your oven, would it be conceivable to run a higher voltage through the smaller cable and reduce it at the end point?

good suggestion, but been a non standard install and the cost of gear at each end it would far outweigh the cost of redoing it proper standard way

firstly you need to check the size of the incomming mains to the shed and the distance and so on and then that will determine how much current you can draw off that cable, if its a villa im guessing that it will be a 2.5mm cable and only good for 20a at say 30m give or take, you could run a caravan socket from the splitter that you have there but it would need to be on a a rcd as its a new circut and could supply a caravan, in saying that the socket would draw 16 a that is in correct, it is rated for 16a so it possably wont draw 16a from the socket, if your loading int he shed is small it shouldnt be a problem at all, but it wouldnt be hard to figure out if you could find out more info on the mamimum demand for the socket would be from the specs of the appliance

Looked at main switch board but nothing labelled "garage".

However there are circuits going to what was the hot water heater which blewup 3 years ago (5k water damage) which we replaced with an on demand gas system.

Will ring for a spsrkie to have a quick look. Ultimately need to get the car first..

Check your outside meter panel as well. Friends have an outbuilding that just went to that and got its own breaker there rather than going inside to the one for the house.

By outside do you mean the one that is in the garage? There isn't any outside panels

The garage has a box with separate breakers labelled 15, 15 and 5. (in pictures above)
