I have a very elderly SKIL 1\2 hp router (model 548) that needs repairing.

It runs - just - but sparks and growls while doing so.

I stripped it down and a motor-savvy mate took a look.

He pointed out a broken wire on the armature at the commutator end.

I tried soldering this but without success.

As I said, it runs, though sometimes the spindle needs a half turn before it'll start.

Anyone know someone who could fix this?

He'd need to be the sort of guy who hates throwing away repairable equipment.

I'm in Southland, but I can send the armature anywhere.

PS: If you're about to tell me to buy a new one, please DON'T. I like THIS one because it's very light and easy to handle. Ideal for checking-in door hinges.

Would just be a standard motor rewinding place I would have thought?

Probably, Rich. I just wondered if anyone had dealt with a guy who didn't mind fiddly jobs like repairing the broken wire.

I mean, rewiring the armature would probably cost more than a new router.

A motor rewinding place would probably repair it for you without rewinding it... just take it apart and go to one and ask what they might charge. If it's a very quick job they might do it for nothing.

I've used Chester Electrical in Christchurch for various motor rebuilds, and they have been very good to deal with. If you can't find anyone local, they might be worth a call

Hi,

go and see Wallace Murray Electrical, 10 Bowmont St, Invercargill. They have been doing rewinds for as long as I can remember. Maybe they can help out with that as well. A telephone call would put your mind at ease.

If it's gone gone it would not surprise me if you can still get genuine parts for those.

gzt, thanks. Actually, I've been checking out SKIL links and didn't get anywhere. Closest I could find was this site:

...which shows the armature as item #9, but when I clicked, 'Find me one', it came back with, 'Nope, not available'.

Annoying. I'll bet there's a binfull of these little gizmos sitting on a shelf somewhere around the world :-)
