Hi all

Our current house has ceiling insulation (pink batts, probably 10-15 years old)

and not underfloor insulation

The pink batts in the ceiling have slumped/compacted, I am wondering if Pink Batts will replace them under their "lifetime warranty"?

We are also getting new underfloor insulation done so maybe they can do some kind of deal? :)

I imagine lifetime warranty is not to dissolve, disappear, etc. They are still there? Yes, they will compact over time. Just add another layer. Cynical me sees this as a look after me for everything post.

They are still in the ceiling, I got a quote from Harrison Energy to add underfloor insulation and add another layer to the ceiling insulation (the person told me if it is compacted the insulation is not as effective).

They use polyester which are less prone to compacting over time (from what I have been told) and they offer a 70 year warranty.

But before I go with that I want to make sure the insulation warranty actually means something or I will just have to add/replace new layers every couple of years.

I've seen Pink Batts after 15 years that look almost as good as new purely because they were installed so carefully. The primary cause of compaction is usually inadequate installation which degrades the loft: pressing down on the batting, pushing it into corners and ripping it by hand. Water damage is particularly bad.

I won't buy or install glass wool insulation anymore because it is impossible not to damage it any time you work near it. So far, polyester works a lot better for us. It is easy to install. No itching. It comes in large blankets that are easy to roll out over the old batts.

What R value is the quoted underfloor? The building code only requires R1.3 but you should go higher than that.

1.6 but I am looking at 1.8. The property is in Auckland BTW.

Is anyone familiar with blended wool (sheep wool + polyester) insulation, how does that compare to pure polyester?

Are you sure they had a life time warranty back then? I beleve they may have changed the formulation some time back

Dont know if it's life time or not, but surely will be more than 10 years.

Dont know if it's life time or not, but surely will be more than 10 years.

Ours in the ceiling have slumped too, but I think they are the old formulation as they are around 15 years old. Not sure what the requirement is for the life of insulation. It believe it is specified in the building code, or the AS documents, but they may have changed since installed. The problem is proving the age, and whether they have been walked over in the ceiling or had external forces on them etc that have compressed them. Generally what people do though is stick another layer over the top, to increase the R value even more, as generally more heat is lost through the ceiling, than elsewhere.

I think we might just put another layer on top rather than bothering with warranties.

Is anyone familiar with wool blended insulation? (wool + polyester, i.e. Ecofleece)

We got wool insulation blanket installed over the pink batts in the ceiling of our previous house. Immediately noticeable difference in insulation (thermal and acoustic). We also got the underfloor - wool with a poly layer. Again there was an immediately noticeable difference in floor board temperature.

We have since sold the house but no regrets, with the choice of insulation.

Thanks for the feedback, is the insulation in your ceiling wool + polyester or wool + fibreglass?

We are going with wool + polyester in the ceiling and pure polyester for the underfloor.
