If there's a specific forum this should go in, then hopefully a mod will move it.  Otherwise, here goes...

I've finally decided to get some quotes on fully rewiring our house, and cabling for data at the same time.  So I'm on the hunt for qualified/registered electricians in Palmerston North.  Anyone know of someone they want to recommend?

The electrician that our plumbers used for wiring in a new Infinity gas hot water system last month may be a possibility - when I was talking to him he'd said he'd been involved in IT for a few years until recently setting up on his own, and I believe may have better knowledge of the data side of things than many electricians are rumoured to have. Let me know if you want me to find his contact details (got the bill yesterday).

SAL Electrical. Awesome guys. Do great work.

And yep, can't go past Contel for data cabling.

So is it better to go with different guys for data and electrical, or just a case of finding the right outfit that does both?

SAL Electrical were the electrical subbies when we had our sleepout/HT built about four years ago. That work involved some basic data needs. We were totally happy with them, so agree they'd be worth a try.

If I may put my own hand up? I've fitted our house out with Cat5e, a network cupboard, etc. If you want to have a look at my own work, please let me know.

Hi Darth, I'll keep that in mind.  The primary issue is electrical rewiring, but I figured it would make sense to do both electrical and data at the same time, especially if there's little additional work or cost.  If I end up just getting the electrical wiring done I may look at the data stuff separately down the track.  It's always been a goal of mine to have the house properly wired for data, but not if it snowballs into a major renovation effort.  A complicating factor is an outside chance that we will need to upsize and move.  If we did that, we'd need to evaluate the cost/return on any major renovation work prior to sale.

I've contacted two electrical firms to quote for the work, so once I've got those quotes in I'll evaluate what I do next.

The main advantage to get power and data done together is that its often done concurrent with some renovation work. Often if you decide where you want a data outlet there's a chance you will need a power outlet next to it, so worth having at least a plan of where the proposed data should go and which ones will need power, as well as leaving enough space for the data to go in safely (generally preferable to be on other side of a stud for complete separation).

Another factor is that few sparkies know much about data and voice, wiremap test their data work, or interested in useful advice about things like outlets for security cameras or wireless. Having said that, there is still the odd sparkie with some data background who might be quite in demand. And if you decide to get a new data cabinet (get the biggest you can so the router and tv splitters and everything can go inside if needed) you will need power and earth inside the cabinet.

Time to find a new industry!

Just ask the sparkies to run the Cat5e/Cat6 to where you want. Fit it off yourself. Running the cable is 95% of the battle.

Ok, that's cool. If you want to have a look at my own work and chat about the ins and outs of home networking, just to get a few ideas even, you're welcome to do so.
