Painting three wardrobes, 6 bay mdf and two two bay wooden. One shelf in the wooden has two lots of bleeding. Thanks kids. Sealer is water based with linseed oil in it. Shall I wipe with white vinegar or turps to dissolve it? Bleach?

Had this on a garage floor which I dissolved with turps but unsure re water based undercoat.

Cheers

You don't normally use a sealer on wood. The stain is in the wood or on an existing coat of paint?

Get the undercoat with 1,2,3 on the can. That seems to stop anything bleeding thru at all.

Ah. I want them all gloss white hence I assumed I'd need a sealer/undercoat.

They are stained and I've sanded them

Primer for wood, sealer for anything porous (gib and concrete).

Start with a coat of acrylic primer undercoat (e.g. Resene quick dry). One coat will be enough for timber, I always do two coats on MDF.

If the stain is old, you should be okay. If you get some bleed through you will likely need a further coat of oil based undercoat. This acts as a barrier layer.

Then two topcoats. If you haven't already bought the paint, consider a semi rather than a full gloss. It's much more forgiving and easier to get a nice looking finish.
