We use our microwave as a timer, set to 10 minutes, thought it was timer. Came back after couple of minutes, dead. Just smells a bit like burned plastic.

Nothing broken inside / melted. Microwave is less than 1 year old.

It's a Samsung Me6104st1

So, did some research, most likely the fuse is blown. But how do I find out where it is? And which one I need? Does a generic one like this one work?

If it smells like burnt plastic then sounds like a bigger issue than a simple blown fuse

Maybe, but it randomly smelled like that when it was operating normal. Not a huge smell.

Where can I find the service manual, i.e. how to know where the fuse is?

DO NOT OPEN A MICROWAVE IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING

Microwave ovens contain a high voltage capacitor that if not discharged can carry enough charge to kill.

There are a few deaths every year in Australia and New Zealand from people not knowing what they are doing with microwave ovens.

When a Microwave oven is operated without anything in it will cause high standing wave ratio on the Magnetron.

There is a good chance the Magnetron in cooked and probably not worth repairing the oven.

Take the Mirowave to a repair shop.

@John, thank you. But I'm reading that the breaker panel is separated? Maybe that's safe to open, or not?

Perhaps you have been microwaved, you may now possess superpowers see if you now have super strength or are turning a different colour. You may not need a microwave any more and can cook your food with laser beams from your eyes.

I'm assuming OP intended to use the separate timer function but instead of 'Timer>10 min>Go' accidentally went 'Power>10 min>Go'.

I've almost done that myself a few times. Well, least I don't think I have ever done it.

If you've turned the microwave on with no food in it it'll basically cook itself to death after about around 5 mins due to nothing to absorb the energy.

Many ovens have a thermal fuse that will trip to save it. Some won't.

As pointed out though you should never open a microwave yourself. The risks mentioned above are very real.

Some of you folks need to have your brains checked. Turning on a microwave oven with nothing inside, to use as a timer? Sheesh. Timers cost a dollar a dozen. Microwaves, not so much.

OP, take it to the repair shop.

I just say "OK Google, set timer for 10 minutes" and my phone takes care of the rest.

Just don't use your mobile as a timer whilst charging its battery in the microwave ;-)
