Howdy all,

I am renting and do not have the option to have a dishwasher installed, therefore I want to get a cheap second hand dishwasher and connect it at-will into my kitchen tap. My question is as follows: Does anyone know where I can get hoses that can connect to kitchen taps (I have a mixer)? I've tried googling and trawling through TradeMe to no avail. I'm not a very DIY orientated person, so unsure what stores to go to.

Cheers all,

Cru

The connector will likely fit on to normal "laundry tub" tap fittings, probably not onto a kitchen faucet. What will you do with the waste drain hose? You will need to clamp that down to stop it spraying everywhere. Do you have a safe electricity supply?

Forget what the proper name is but I have seen adaptors that join to that thread on mixer tap spouts. And dishwashers come with a hose hanger which looks like an upside down U shaped bit of plastic so you can hook the outlet hose over the side of the sink. make sure you turn the mixer tap to full cold, so you won't have cold water backflowing into the hot water cylinder.

You will probably have to put something heavy on top of the dishwasher otherwise it will probably tip forward when you load up the baskets.

How close is the laundry to the kitchen? Maybe install the dishwasher there instead.

Laundry is external and shared between 4 appartments, so sadly not an option. I read up on the conversion, but other places said put the dishwasher on full hot?

Any idea where to look for said adaptors?

I think you'd need one of these:

You might try going to a home brew shop, as these are used to connect still condensers to tap mixers. M22 to M24.

Do not connect to hot water. Dishwashers connect to the cold tap, and heat the water themselves. Most of the cycles are done with cold water anyway.

Is it worth reviewing the rental, and getting a place that solves that problem, and ideally, has some other gains as well?

I understand your pain; we recently left a place without a dishwasher and I was looking into similar options whilst there.

Small bench-top units which connect to the kitchen tap using either a similar adaptor to external water filters etc and drain into the sink are common place in Japan and I'm surprised at their lack of at availability in NZ.

Closest I got short of bringing one in was looking at a single dish drawer from Appliance Shed which I was going to sit on the bench.

If you're not DIY inclined your best bet (after talking to landlord) is to get a plumber to hook everything up to ensure it's safe and sound (there are considerations around electricity, backflow prevention, drainage and water pressure...) - else all necessary parts are available from your local plumbing store.

What you may be thinking of is some form of "aerator adapter".

Apparently dishwashing powders replaced phosphates with enzymes and they work better at lower temperatures. The machine starts off with cold and heats up. A lot of the washing is done during the heat up time. At high temp the enzyme ingredients stop but they've already done their bit.

One of these maybe?

I for one wouldn't fancy cleaning up the mess when the face seal leaks and sprays the room with a high velocity stream.

So, the landlord won't let you have a dishwasher properly plumbed in even you are supplying the dishwasher and doing/paying for the work yourself?

I plumbed my own and it really wasn't a hard job at all. Just need to tee off from the cold feed under the sink and replace the trap under the sink with one that has an inlet to attach the waste hose - both of which can easily be capped if the dishwasher is removed. I'm surprised your landlord would be opposed to this if it isn't costing him anything.
