I found this in a collection of brass bits and bobs.

 

It looks like solid brass, and fits in the hand.

 

Both ends look as they have been pounded into a mushroom shape.

 

I think it may have been used to shape something ?

Probably just a brass drift - hit one end with a hammer, hold the other end against something that needs to be moved. It will mushroom over time with being struck.

 

Brass is used because it is soft, and less likely to damage whatever is being hit with it.

Also, brass won't cause any sparks which could be a safety concern.
