I looked at my address on two items of mail I received today and both had the same code on them - even though they were from two different organisations.

The code was KDY108 (several spaces) 5

Does anybody have a clue as to what this is for?

Was it stamped on? Perhaps they've gone through the same mail centre?

It is a sorting code that makes it cheaper for the sending organisation.

Kind of like a post code.

Got a picture? Or a who from (the company)

Is it in the envelope? And is it windowed or closed.

We used postcode and city sorting here, but I guess nz post or dx mail could add their own sorting codes.

The code is printed on just like it was part of the address. It is even on the letter inside the envelope - visible through a window.

It is not stamped on afterwards.

Why would you need an extra "sorting code" when we have postcodes?

Dunno, if it was on envelope and not the printed page I'd have expected it was a mail sort machine mark, ie put on during sorted by the used postal service.

What were the originating companies?  I'm curious if it's from one of our sites.

Because postcodes cover entire groups of suburbs, In the US they have them as part of the zip code making it longer so that things are grouped to go straight to the delivery depots to go out rather than needing sorting. Bypass parts of the system and save some $$.

Ok both Datum I think.  I've not heard of any extra codes used in sorting or identification.  And it's not a requirement for NZ Post, they have their own requirements but that's to do with the formatting etc of the address, and the 4 digit post code.

I looked some pdfs in the NZ post bulk mail guide:

https://www.nzpost.co.nz/business/sending-within-nz/over-300-letters-documents/bulk-mail-services/volumepost-1

Looked at two or three. Got nothing Someone else may have better luck. There is a lot of flexibility in the codes and it's not clear if everything is documented.

It was accidentally left when the NSA opened your mail.

Most of the  nz post guides detail clear space, fonts and location of postcode etc.

OP, the code, is it down the bottom of the address or at the top where your name is?

This is a sorting code. It's actually the code for your postie run. The mailhouses can now print mail in a specific order and add these codes, mail then bypasses all the regular sorting by machine and people, and goes directly to the postie branch. For bulk mail, it is a significant cost saving.

This is correct.

It is the first line in the address - but I think the next post shows the answer
