Hi guys,

Does anyone have experience good, bad or otherwise with the various brands of garage door and openers out there? Have asked for a few quotes for my new build from all the usual suspects, but any feedback would be appreciated!

Garador/Dominator offer the wireless control module which has appeal, provided their implementation is secure. We decided against any HA for the front door lock (going instead for the Yale SYDM3109), but having remote access into the garage could be useful for family/tradies etc?

Try Conqueror Doors , they have models that are very quiet and run smooth

Maybe you need to say what type and model you are looking at getting.

It is difficult and many of the brands are selling what appear to be the same doors. Also they are regually changing the models. Sectional doors seem to offer the best type of door. They used to do a model where you couldn't trap you fingers in the joints when opening and closing manually, (i've jammed my fingers before) but not sure if that is now available.

I would suggest genuine coloursteel, over some of the cheaper imported steel options, as you don't know the durability of those. Coloursteel however from my own experience is very durable, as I have some that are 15 years old and still look as good as new with no powdering of the paint. Although for some types (eg premium flat panels), they only seem to offer powdercoated.

I'm after a 4-panel (sectional), insulated door (something like this) - not really interested in cheap imports as I don't want it warping in years to come. Having said that, it's on the south side of the house, so won't see any direct sunlight.

That looks like it is quite a thick steel gauge, so imagine it isn't cheap. Were you recommended that gauge due to the risk of the door 'canning' eg rippling across it? I thick it is more visible if you go for a dark coloured door. I was looking at the Navada one myself for a new project, as it has the negative detail between the panels. But it isn't quite as heavy gauge. My last doors were garador, which have been in for 15 years, using the steeline profile and coloursteel panels, and they have been good

Yeah, I've asked for a quote on both the Nevada and Sierra; I liked the negative detail, but agree I don't need the heaviest gauge steel.

How's your planning coming along?

Cool, keen to see how the slab looks with the insulation and also the frames :)

we have the Concept Development Plans (just basic floor plans), which we are just making small changes to (i apparently did a good job of the plans i drew up). so hopefully by the end of the week we will have settled on something. Then we get the next set which has rooflines etc in it.

One thing I discovered when we did our sectional garage door was water sits in the grooves between sections after driving rain. When it's opened, the water drips all over the cars. Different designs may avoid this. Might be worth asking.

We used Windsor doors in the Flat woodgrain and insulated very similar to what your looking at.

Door works DC door opener with 3 remotes.

Very happy with it.

I'm guessing that the "finger-safe" profile in the joins of pressed steel doors probably reduces that - there's less horizontal surface on the join for water to collect on.

They tend to look neater from the inside too - with flat hinges between panels
