Took me about an hour to install this cat door today. Now the room door can be closed to eliminate loss of heat.

Was easy. Door was bought on eBay for few bucks. Arrived with a note from NZ Post "sorry about your parcel damage.." When opened slightly smashed box, the door inside was intact...

I had to paint the flap on my one to stop light coming in. They really dont like it being opaque but they will use it if they have to.

The door flap on the cat toilet and this one are similar tinted. He had no issues with both.

Mine is painted black on both sides, and I had to add some more stripping around the edge since it had some light coloured fluffy crap that let light thru.

One of the cats is really cautious with it since it cant see thru it.

We keep our moggie inside at night - otherwise he gets into trouble with the tough neighbourhood cats and I end up with vet bills!

I wish I could find a cat door with a timer so it would automatically allow RFID access, inbound only after dark but daytime out regardless of RFID and daytime in with RFID. At the moment I have set the mode by hand... sounds like yet another project I don't have the time for!

Impressive.

And a useful link to an inexpensive FDX-B/HDX RFID Reader.

Thanks

yeah - and in the mean time do not let your cat talk to our cats - they can get out when set to "in only mode" by get their neck close to trigger the RFID and then claw pulling open flap and then head under flap and out - very impressive to watch till you go ah crap they out again....

@kryptonjohn Isn't that what "curfew" mode on this one does?

yes - but it hand done hand (turn the knob to in only) and smart cat can still get out - like ours

edit - oh that version - it only 1 direction - let all cats in , micro chip out

edit 2 : no wait - now remember - it lock at that time - ie if out - no getting in till the morning - knew there was something wrong with it :) or is it both that - know there something wrong with it when looking.

No, this one does the following:

Daytime mode - all cats out, microchip in.

Curfew mode - no cats out, microchip in. So your cat is never locked outside, but once he comes in after curfew he can't get back out until morning.

Curfew mode is set on a timer, e.g. 6am-9pm daytime mode, 9pm-6am curfew mode.

EDIT: Regardless of how smart the cat is, they shouldn't be able to get out. The sensor is on the outside, so there should be no way it could scan their chip when the cat is on the inside.

all cat out was the issue for us - we wanted to keep 1 cat in all the time, and the both direction reader does not have curfew mode and can be open from inside in the manual let in on mode

Right. SureFlap does have a model for that now as well. But that model doesn't have a timer for curfew mode.

EDIT: You updated your post about the dual scan not having curfew mode as I was typing mine.

bagheera: yeah - we got that model

So, are you saying with the dual scan model they can trick it by scanning themselves on the inside reader which opens the inbound latch and then they hook and pull the door open?
