Hey guys,

With our new build progressing nicely, we're planning a long-weekend trip to Christchurch to look at furniture and housewares (options in Dunedin are a little bit limited) and was hoping for any recommendations on brands/quality.

We're quite keen on the Freedom Furniture & Mocka style (our house will have a Scandinavian/Minimalist kind of feel), and we're trying to find that sweet spot of price and quality, particularly as we're after quite a bit of furniture (chaise, 2 & 3 seater sofa's, children's bedroom furniture, bar stools and occasional chairs and lots of things to dress the room).

Any thoughts appreciated!!

Cheers, yeah I've had a look in their Dunedin store as we're getting all our appliances there, but they don't really seem to do the style of furniture we're after.

Global Living.

This used to have only outrageously expensive stuff, but they seem to have come to their senses and have some good stuff, minimalist euro/scandinavian design, some of it even NZ made and at not too bad prices.

I posted this photo a few days ago to show Daiken heat pump. IIRC the bar stools which are extremely comfortable were $225 each, glass on aluminium frame extension table (NZ made) with 6 chairs, about $2700.

Red Furniture

Got our entertainment unit custom made here - for an extremely reasonable price + without the ridiculous wait times of other places.

They CAD offerings so tweaking things is definitely a possibility.

Variable from not bad to quite good, but the value looks very good. They have pretty frequent sales. We purchased some oak furniture from them a couple of months ago, in a color not in stock, hoping for delivery soon.

I've had good dealings with Smiths City when it comes to furniture, and they don't make you get a GEM Visa/Q Card.

What's the issue with their Leather furniture?

Interested in this answer as well as we are in the market for two leather recliners. Wife has brochure from HN and prices seem pretty steep but I am pretty frugal!! (we live in Wellington area).

IFurniture in Christchurch would be worth checking out - or their website.

I've only been to their massive Auckland showroom - it's claimed to be the largest for furniture in NZ. They have long hours 7-days a week. Most of the product wasn't of interest to me but some was just what I needed and has lasted fine since purchasing 2-years ago. Some prices are super low so be a little cautious.

Have a look at Matisse Furniture , 134 Victoria street. Next block north of the casino. Also further along Victoria Street, Belle Interiors, 145 Victoria Street.

Also Several shops on Moorehouse Ave, South Side between Durham Street and Antigua Street. One of them Ascot Design. Also there is a Farmers Home store there and I was in there recently and

they have a lot of more trendy and modern stuff in there than the other ordinary Farmers shops have. I was quite surprised at what they had in there. Prices seemed reasonable so worth a look.

If you want plain well designed Scandinavian type furniture, have you looked in any Shop/commercial fit out store/warehouses type places as they sometimes have ranges of modern furniture with clean lines that can

be used in domestic situations. Board room, executive office type chairs, tables and book shelves etc.

Freedom Furniture that was mentioned, is further out on Mashlands Road in a bulk buy center just in front of Bunnings.

Tower Junction Center, Blenheim Road. Simply Furniture shop just inside Clarence Street entrance. Might be worth a look as they have more designer stuff. Also Nodd Home Furniture. Stupidly over priced at Nodd but more reasonable when they have one of their many sales.

I have found the best option for furniture is to buy good quality mid century second hand pieces, many of which are which are basically Scandinavian designs.. Some stores will sell them restored and recovered, if you don't have the time/know how. http://mrbigglesworthy.co.nz/ sell some, they also sell new modern stuff. The build quality on the old stuff can be far superior than big box retail stores furniture, as they made them to last back then. eg real quality timbers and proper joints You may also spend more, but potentially the furntiure may last a life time, so you save over time by not having to replace it for the latest trends. The fact is that the latest trends are actually trying to replicate the old furniture. If you are going new, I would suggest looking at Dansker mobile, as some of their piece. Matisse, ECC and Backhouse are a few others I would suggest if you are looking for premium quality. You do get what you pay for.
