I'm moving from Wellington to the North Shore. I'm looking to setup the rental's power / gas / internet. There are two of us and we’ll be out of the house for 12-14hours every day except the weekends. I've had a good read of what's available and am overwhelmed with the options. So – advice, stories, do’s, don’ts, best buys …… would be much appreciated please.

Cheers

For gas do you mean piped gas - natural gas. Or bottled gas - LPG? As for Internet, can you get fibre? And do you have a post paid cellphone? As you can get a discount by having Internet with the same company.

I prefer 2Degrees. As @AredWood said, 2Deg, Vodafone & Spark offer discounts if you already have a post paid plan with them. I hear that My Republic offers very decent speeds while Trustpower does electricity & internet together. One of the two does support only via email though.

Any chance you can stick with the same suppliers as in WLG? At least phone / internet wise? Many here @ GZ like Electric Kiwi or Flick if you are aware of your peak usage. Your best bet is to visit Powerswitch and find a retailer to your liking. For my puposes, Energy Online was good enough. No hassle with the accounts, clear & easy to read statement, slightly higher daily charge negated by a 20% prompt payment discount.

I am not aware of any electricity provider currently offering sign-up bonuses, so maybe consider not locking yourself into a 12/24 month contract & wait to see what summer brings.

Piped Gas. Fibre is available for install. I just need to call and order (from someone). Post paid - yes I do.

I'll have a closer look at the suggestions made - which I thank you guys for. Cheers.

Based on experience and threads on the forum I wouldn't go with My Republic - best read the ISP forums on here.

Around here BigPipe, Voyager, Spark and 2degrees (in no specific order) are highly regarded for ISP providers. I am personally with Skinny Direct (https://skinnydirect.co.nz/) for mobile (pay $30/mo for 3gb data, unlimited calls and texts) and they're extremly good.

I normally wouldn't say Trustpower as they're not the cheapest in general but if you're only after basic internet (100/20Mbit Fibre) then it could be worth looking at them for a bundled Internet/Power/Gas deal. Be very wary of free offers from them (for example, a free TV like they've done recently) as you're really paying for it in the long term. Say you're keen for a bundled deal and also say that you've been keen on potentially going with a cheaper company like Electric Kiwi for your power and "insert local gas provider here" for gas and they'll normally make up a special deal for you - again, be aware for the "freebies" unless if they're actually free. Also I would add be careful of those "split pricing" deals where they may offer $xx for the first 6 months and $xx for the rest of the term as they're often more expensive.

Personally I am with BigPipe for internet, Electric Kiwi for power and Skinny Direct for mobile and this works very well for me (due to no contracts also) however I note your use case is different due to Gas of which is often cheaper to get bundled but do check local gas providers and compare.

Last time I checked piped gas prices (ages ago) Contact was the cheapest. Also check Genesis Energy gas prices. But check Pulse Energy for power. When I last checked they were cheaper per unit than Electric Kiwi, but no free hour of power. (But also compare Electric Kiwi of course) If it will be a month or so more until you arrive, also consider Flick Electric. Their prices are high right now due to high wholesale prices due to low hydro lake levels. (will drop back down in approx 1 month) But assuming that you have gas hot water and cooking (and even better if you have gas heating as well). Flick electric is ideal, as most of your peak time energy usage will be gas. And most of your remaining power usage you can time shift to offpeak times.

Also I don't know if you are intending to get Sky TV installed, But if so for new signups there are much better deals available than what is on the sky website. Check the Sky sub forum on GZ. Also Vodafone often do bundled deals with Sky.

Also you will soon discover a very annoying quirk with Auckland power. Almost all of Auckland is supplied by Vector Lines. But the North and West areas don't get a rebate cheque each year. While Central, East and South do. This is to do with former power board areas that eventually all ended up as Vector.

Oh yeah - Welcome to the Shore.

Yeh I am just about to move into a house on the shore with piped gas.

I signed up with contract when they did the install. I don't think contact are the cheapest when it comes to power. But power is difficult, depending on your usage and if its bundled with gas or not.

I am probably gonna give contact a go. They do the prompt payment discount, and the 35/c per month off fuel. Which for me, brings diesel down significantly, that combined with my occasional countdown savings & 10c days mean i usually get a free tank or close to diesel nearly once per month.

As for internet. I work @ a wholesale ISP. And would prefer not to make recommendations here & there as we deliver all sorts of different services to many popular NZ providers. So my analysis excludes internet per se.

I've gone Meridian. I'll feedback on how this goes. NOT a good start today - waited 6 hours for them to arrive to turn on the power. No show. 1star so far.
