Hello

I will definitely be mounting the TV on the wall above the fireplace. I am trying to find the best way to some how get all the media boxes close by without looking ugly; I have XBOX, Bose Control Centre, Apple TV... not that many. Bose box does the HDMI switching. Any great ideas to make them hidden, or mounted? Wall mounted cabinets are most commonly seen if there is no fireplace below. Been hunting online, Pinterest - my architect suggested between the wall space but I think it will get too hot (even with thermal insulation) and lack of airflow means some of the gears will be fried. Bose control centre does need IR reception so may need a IR relocator.

If you have any awesome ideas, please share?!

Have you consider HDMI over cat6 cable. That's what did. DVD, media player (WDTV), sky all in the cupboard with an IR extender.

I can't find the product I used and it was not that expensive at the time. I got it from Acquire which was a UniTek product and it used a pair of cat6 cable for each HDMI socket, and it used a wall plate.

I have relatives that were currently looking at doing this,

- and the AV crowd they are using to install the sound/video gear, recommended that TVs should NOT be placed above a fire place as the extra heat is bad for them..

Is it possible to install my VIERA TV above a fireplace? It is possible to install a VIERA TV above a fireplace, however, caution and common sense must be used, as well, the following:

Do not install a Plasma TV recessed in a wall, as this will cause the panel to overheat and may damage the unit.
In regards to heating and humidity requirements, the temperature must not exceed 40°C and a non-condensational humidity of 20 - 80 must be maintained.

I once looked at a house, where the tv was wall mounted, with all the media/connection etc built into a false wall that was accessible behind. As this was an interior wall, this was possible.

But if you're on an exterior wall it may be more difficult.

I was lucky enough in our last place that there was a nearby hallway cupboard to the main lounge. So quite simple to just through a 15m HDMI cable to the cupbaord in and then an infrared extender (which I just dodgy'd up the cable with some cat5 to get more length) and then everything just goes in the cupboard. Oh and then wired the speakers back to the cupboard too.

Not only that, TVs mounted above a fireplace tend to be too high up, so not comfortable viewing from a sitting position.

xbox controllers need to be close to where you are playing from, the reception of the console is pretty bad for controllers, and there is no way to extend them. I even tried plugging the reciever for windows into the xbox on a long USB cable and it didnt do anything.

Thanks guys - great advice. Now reading more threads on the forum; I am leaning away from the fireplace and going with fully ducted heat pumps through 2 levels with Lossnay system. This means I will be able to mount the TV lower, and maybe able to create some media rack / space underneath.

My brother installed a section of square down pipe in the wall to hide the standard cables connecting the media devices and the wall mounted TV.

They work great if you're lying on the couch instead :-)

We have ours mounted above a disused fireplace and we haven't had an issue with this. I imagine if I sat a meter or two closer it could be a problem but from 5+ meters (roughly) its OK.

Certainly something to think about anyway.
