Has anyone got a TCL heat pump and can comment on their reliability, noise, performance? Looking at getting one for a small rental, saw them at trade depot with free delivery, reasonable price, but conscious of the old "you get what you pay for"

Looking at the 3.2kW one (3rd one down)

Depending on how big an area you wanting to heat/cool you may find 3.2KW is not going to be enough so it'll always be running at full speed

Check that they are MEPS compliant. And ask about who will install it. As alot of refrigeration techs won't work on no name brand heatpumps. Also consider if it is an inverter one or not. Otherwise it will just cycle on and off - very annoying late at night.

3.2kw is really quite small. Maybe it's good enough for a single room in a well insulated house, but a heat pump that's too small isn't much good.

Many New Zealanders seem to only want to heat one room. Having the whole house warm is much nicer, and I think it's better for you than constantly going from warm to cold.

They have all the non meps ones listed as export only, since that is fine for the islands etc.

several techs I have spoken to say they only chinese native brand worth looking at is gree, who actually make compressors and parts for many other brands.

Size is fine, like I said - small house (2 bedroom house about 55sqm total), with this just needing to heat the living area at about 30sqm.

It's the brand I'm questioning.

It's used by landlords to be able to say "property has a heat pump" without costing them too much.

And perhaps for heating small areas economically.

The best people to ask are installers. Many will have a range of brands they recommend for performance and reliability, and ease of installaiton. Brands like Mitsubishi and Fujitsu were recommended to me. The big issue is parts availability in the future when they need repairing. It can sometimes be false economy going for an unknown in the long run.
