I just bought a house in Pegasus. After speaking to Tower and AA, I was quite surprised at the extent of the "Don't Cover" causes. My impression is the policies have been tightened post earthquake. Some random stuff like not covering damage to the shower drain. Which could occur in a quake and would cost heaps to address in a slab foundation.

If someone has recently has taken out insurance in Chch or know of any key pit falls, I'd be keen to hear about it.

Given the complexities of the Christchurch it maybe a good idea to talk to some insurance brokers to get the best deal, remembering price is not always the best deal.

We left Chch in late 2013 but since then we've been with FMG, one of the few (maybe 2?) insurers who still do full replacement cover and I've found their pricing to be quite competitive. The one house on our street who was repaired for major damage within 12 months of the Feb quake was insured by FMG, unlike us with Vero which ended up requiring us to get lawyers involved to finally get a settlement out of them.

If you are interested in a mutual organisation for insurance, then I can recommend MAS. We moved to North Canterbury after the earthquakes and have found their policies good. (They also do full replacement cover, and cover health items like spectacles excess free on their contents policy).
