I’m lookkng at installing 1 or two POE cameras with NVR. Before buying the gear I want to make sure that illl be able to do it. Is it pretty easy to run the wire by drilling a hole in soffit and it hopefully comes out in the attic and then run it through down the wall or even keep the NVR in attic and somehow give it power. My OTP is in the wall in living room and the wires are coming down the same conduit with antenna wires through a wardrobe in a room behind the living room wall.
Attic has enough room to walk around and access to attic is also pretty easy.
Is this something I should attempt to do myself or not? Before calling a sparky to sort the power in attic I’m planning to run a power cable from garage to attic for testing purposes where I would like to keep the NVR and run an Ethernet cable down the wall from NVR to the router next to OTP.

keep ion mind that drilling up through the soffit potentially could get you straight into timber framing, or even a power cable thats often running along the timber. it could be easier with a really long drill bit to give you more of a vertical hole, otherwise the size of the drill forces the hole to go on an angle. Look for where power cables go into the wall to light switches etc and find where the wall is up in the ceiling so you can get an idea what you will be drilling through.

Time to find a new industry!

It usually gets a little tight out at the edges, but if you feed the cable from the soffit into the ceiling cavity, you should be able to hook it with something and pull it towards you when you're in the ceiling space.

Ran cabling for 4 cameras last week. It gets hot up there, so don't do it on a hot sunny day! Especially if you have a tin roof!

I wouldn't put the NVR in the ceiling space.

Well only reason for putting NVR in ceiling was to avoid getting it stolen in case of a break in, where else can you put it?

I’be already bought the NVR and getting 2 cameras separately. Can still cancel the NVR so just double minded now, don’t want to end up putting it on trademe to recover my money.
It’s costing around $800 for NVR plus 2 cameras and 2 TB HD, cables not included.
Is it worth it? Cameras alone are around $210 each.

Camera details in the link. These are 4K cameras, most likely Dahua rebranded.
Can someone suggest something else within my budget?

Check the framerate at 4k before commiting to those cameras - friend got some "4k" ones and they are... at 7.5 frames per second. Will do 30 only at 1080p so clearly something was cheaped out inside them.

Putting the NVR in the roof space is simply a recipe for disaster. With most easily getting to 50+ degrees if you have a metal roof it won't be a case of if the HDD fails, it'll be a case of how often you have to replace failed HDD's.

I've been looking at the Reolink stuff on Aliexpress - want to get an NVR and 4 cameras.

If I get the NVR on one order and the cameras under another order then I should keep the whole lot under the GST and duty threshold.

They seem to have pretty good reviews.

I'm happy to assume they will - no drama waiting for two separate packages to arrive.

You seem to be reasonably knowledgeable about these things - without wanting to hijack OP's thread what's your opinion on the reolink stuff? In particular the NVR and camera?

I'd pick that night image is definately not that camera.

I've checked out a few Youtube vids like this one and this one - doesn't look too bad. There's obviously some light source in the second one.

I'll share my recent experience which might be helpful...

About a week ago I installed the 5MP Reolink 423 PTZ off Aliexpress and can say for me, it's bloody awesome for the price. I paid the $20 odd extra for DHL shipping and it arrived within about 5 days. LOVE the PTZ as have it mounted on corner of house so can look around both sides. Their iPhone app is pretty good too for easy remote viewing. Note, it needs 22W POE.

I've just ordered 2 more of the basic fixed 4MP cams for $75 each. I'll be doing cable runs outside the house unfortunately so will be using conduit tubing to protect the cable from UV. Unless you're going to drill a large hole in the side of the house to fit the large camera dongle through, I used a junction box on the side of the house net to the cam to house the camera dongles in - this meant I only needed a small hole on the house to poke the ethernet cable through (without plug, then crimped new on on after poking through).

Not using a NVR (for now) - just relying on email motion alerts. Also using their Mac software which works well for me.

I wonder with fast internet’s these days if there is an online streaming site to act as a cloud based NVR.
That would keep the cost down and remove that concern of having it stolen/destroyed.
Seems that is where a lot of the cost is too.

Side note,remember that cameras won’t stop crime, they’ll just give you video evidence to confirm your story and maybe identify someone. If the camera is visible then that may be a deterrent, or if you put some stickers up to warn of it.

Reolink's don't seem to be very well liked over at Ipcamtalk.

I prefer Dahua Starlight's or Hikvision....

I actually put my NAS and a PC up in my ceiling - But only after doing some temp measurements/monitoring of outside temperatures vs temperatures in the ceiling (ceiling temps are continuously monitored via wireless temp sensor).

I had some interesting findings--- Temps in ceiling (during the daytime) seem to be roughly 4C to 5C warmer vs the outside temps. Due to the positioning of the Garage -- The garage tends to get warmer than my roof cavity by 1 or 2C or more sometimes. When the diesel UTE gets parked in the garage (after a drive) - I got a temp measurement of 47C in the garage vs a nice cool 25C to 30C in the roof.

Currently, with an outside temp of 20C. Inside house North Side 24.6C, South Side 26.8C, Roof cavity 24C, Garage 26.8C. Temp readings off NAS Hard drives at 32C, 32C, 32C, 33C, NAS Cpu 38C
