I have a friend who lets a couple properties. He just evicted a particularly obnoxious tenant who was very nasty and aggressive. He is concerned that she may have been using P.

He wants to sell the property and he needs to ensure that if P was smoked there, any residue is below the legal contamination threshold. He is wondering if he had the carpet commercially cleaned, would that be sufficient to make a significant difference to any test? He is certain P was not cooked on the premises but is having trouble finding this kind of information and I am wondering if anyone here would know. He wants to do as much as he can to fix any problems before official testing is carried out.

They won't test carpet on initial testing as it will likely require a piece to be removed. Mainly wall and ceiling surfaces.

You can either buy test kits yourself or get in an independent testing services. Look up meth testing in your area.

If you get a positive result, best thing to do is a thorough clean down of ceiling and walls and retest.

Check out this site, more for information not necessarily who to use https://www.nzmethtesting.co.nz

For those reading that tenant and also rent out properties - Get a meth test done between leases, It can protect yourself as a tenant and if you are a landlord and wish to prosecute a tenant you need to prove it was in fact negative before they move in.

In this current environment of mass hysteria surrounding meth contamination, I would suggest purchasing a test kit from trademe. I would personally avoid using any service which may retain any record of a failed result. It is quite easy to remediate without paying for the men in the magic green jump suits and masks with their secret potion (sugar soap) to come round and clean.

They need to be aware that despite the NZS8510-2017 this area still very much the Wild West. I'm unaware of any recognised training of the sample collectors.

It's really a big exercise in scaremongering and many people have been utterly fleeced over the years - I know of one myself. The reality is that unless premises have been used for manufacture, there's really nothing to worry about.

Common sense is not as common as you think.
