I'm trying to find LED replacements for 40 and 60 watt small bayonet bulbs in our bedroom. The ones I got from eBay were sh!te, displaying a purple haze. I've not had much luck finding many other options, so can anyone point me in the right direction for what I should be searching for? I can't buy longer bulbs as they just won't fit behind the shades.

They're a version of the classic incandescent bulb just with a smaller 'head', so clearly a B22 bayonet fitting. It's the size that confuses me; going by charts it seems the imperial size may be called an A15. Here they may well be an S45 going by what is the only LED version of the bulb I have found here, ie
http://www.lightingplus.co.nz/lighting/led-lighting/lamps-and-lightbulbs/led-s45-45w-b22-opal-lamp3000k.html

If I was to look for other versions of such a bulb, what should I be looking for, whether it be in NZ or from eBay/AliExpress?

Thanks for any help.

I have a number of smaller bulbs at home in wall lights that I swapped to LED about a year ago. No idea of the brand but I had no issues sourcing them from a local electrical wholesaler. Have you tried one of them rather than automatically assuming you'll find something overseas?

I know a few people who have all raved about buying cheap LED bulbs off Aliexpress and then rave about how terrible they are. When good quality LED bulbs are now so cheap locally I'm not sure what benefits there are.

I expect any reasonable lighting store would have what you are looking for and can advise you of what's available.  Sometimes the internet is not the best way to find something - go talk to a hooman expert :-)

I don't know if they are the same but small form-factor bulbs were easily found off the shelf when I replaced all our table/bedside lamp bulbs late last year, for only about $5- $6 from memory.

LED bulbs are not that expensive now that sourcing from dodgy overseas suppliers with no come-back if something goes wrong is such a good idea anymore.

If you're in Wellington (and now Auckland too) you can always go to The Light Bulb Man.

Small bayonet will be the problem. That is basically an extinct holder.

Reason I got all my lamps from overseas is that there is crap colour selection locally, and also some of the cheapies I have bought have had obnoxious 100Hz flicker. If philips would stop only selling orange and blue tinted ones and do a proper cool white, I would probably get all of theirs since they seem to have finally got their act together with not failing or flickering.

Sorry, shouldn’t have said small bayonet bulb - they’re a standard B22 bayonet fitting but the bulb itself is considerably smaller (and needs to be to fit behind the shades). I’ve found that LED bulbs with a B22 fitting grow quite big (therefore long) at anything but the lower sizes.

Not sure why some have assumed I’d not checked out the range and talked to people in the local lighting shops - I’ve linked to the sole option I’ve found locally, but neither the other main lighting shop in town nor Mitre 10/Bunnings have anything.

Yes, I agree the quality of OS-sourced bulbs can be variable to say the least, but these bedroom ones are the only ones that have been unusable. I have certainly saved a packet buying replacement bulbs for nearly all the house this way - the downlights and the candle-shaped bulbs from Ali Express in particular were way cheaper and are excellent.

That said, happy to buy locally and if I can’t find any options other than that linked to in my original post that may have to be it; I just hoped to find if there were other options here or OS and what I should be searching for, given my failure to find much choice either in local stores or on the net.

You will probably have to look for a filament style one since those can be made with no driver in them so smaller, but then you will have bad flicker, and they only come in the orange range of colours - I have even seen some as bad as 2300k.

Plenty of G45 B22 filament lamps on aliexpress. Which I find is easier than dealing with most local retailers crap websites

Possibly too big. These are what I was thinking of. https://www.bunnings.co.nz/philips-led-4-5w-filament-dimmable-warm-white_p00328118

the philips has a small gap there which means they may have found enough space to stuff a smoothing capacitor in it so hopefully no or less flicker than the cheap ones off aliex.

Perhaps something from light.co.nz?

https://light.co.nz/products/fsl-led-b22-bulb-5w-1?variant=11237047751

They have dimensions on their website, so should be easy to figure out if worth trying or not.

I use a bunch of bulbs from light.co.nz where having Philips Hue just wasn't a great idea and found generally all their bulbs to be excellent.
