After a little advise regarding where to locate the attached bulbs. I have tracked down similar on RS but they don't have the long contact wires per the original.

I wonder if the standard 12v 3w "instrument lights" (available from auto shops) would do the trick. That's actually what they look like too.
Although they're designed to plug in to a socket, the pigtail wires are simply folded around the glass and they can be straightened out. A bit hard to tell though whether they'd be long enough - perhaps not.
Common sense is not as common as you think.
