One of the batteries from my B&D matrix drill has failed (according to the charger which fast-flashes red when I try to charge it).

The replacement battery (2.0Ah) from Mitre10 is $89... but can these batteries be economically repacked or repaired?

Alternatively, I could replace it with this:

For a little more than the price of two batteries!

When I have had ryobis declared as failed by the charger, it was just that one pair of cells in the pack was slightly below threshold for a bad pack because I left it too long and they seem to self discharge some of them faster than others. Opened it up and fully charged each pair of parallel cells on my hobby charger individually and then it was back in business again. I suspect that they dont have proper ballanceing in the batteries and just have pretty basic battery management.

Batteries are often a lot compared to the handset, relatively speaking. You would think the handset would be a lot more than the batteries, but they are not. I have a professional grade Hitachi ones, and it is the batteries and charger that have the higher cost compared to the handset. The more expensive professional ones though do have better batteries, and batteries that charge faster, than consumer grade ones. So IMO ,unless you are not happy with the handset performance, I would just buy a replacement battery for it.

How much of hurry are you in?

I need to replace my Matrix driver unit after some aluminium swarf got into the motor (with spectacular results).

That means buying a complete kit including a couple of new batteries I don't really need.

I'd be happy to sell you one for much less than $89.
