Has anyone tried those pressure activated pumps that boost hot water pressure?

 

I'm have gravity fed water tank so low water pressure, rather than do it properly and put a whole house pump in on the inlet side I was hoping to get away with one of those little pumps you install just after the HWC.

 

There seem to be a whole bunch of them for sale on TM, each claiming to be great and all from China  - anyone tried these?

We used one of these (from Trademe) in the old place prior to upgrading to a mains pressure cylinder. 

 

1) It was effective, it increased the pressure to the shower markedly

 

2) It was noisy, this place was small, but the pumps are quite small but mike high pitched noises when they are running

 

3) We had issues with the auto shut off sensor after a couple of months, this was due to the springs getting softer on it which was causing surging, so it would go to turn off but enough pressure would pop it open again and it would surge again repaeatedly, only way to fix was to turn off the power to the pump (wall socket switch).  I fixed this by putting in a check valve priror to the unit from memory and that stopped this occurring.

 

4) Be cautious of your tank size, ours was relatively small, and this unit means you will move through your tank at a faster rate!

 

We probably used it for a year and a half, and once the check valve was placed it worked as intended wihtout issue, and so for a budget concious fix I can recommend them.
