Can anyone point me to a supply of DIY'able NZ/Aus mains plugs, i.e. I have some US sourced appliances that I want to permanently replace the plugs for so I'm not hassled by adapters.

There are some cheap n nasty types on the o'seas websites like eBay and Aliexpress that I don't like the look of. The Chinese junk tends to be weird colors & shapes - need to be circular to fit recessed sockets - and they lack insulation sleeves on the + & - pins.

And I'm having a surprising amount of difficulty finding any locally e.g. Jaycar or other usual suspects.

Both hardware stores (bunnings, miter 10 etc), and the electrical wholesalers (Ideal, Cory's etc) will carry these.

When you say "appliance" you are talking about things that can run on 230v?

Are the mains leads compliant? the test and tag buy would refuse to tag anything with a wirable plug that was also not a transparent one so if youre taking to a workplace consider that too.

PDL sells clear-backed ones for this; you should be able to get them from Corys etc. The test-and-tag guy could tag them, but he'd have to open them up, or at least test it (the standard isn't too clear). I totally don't have a miswired manufacturer-molded plug sitting in a drawer...

You can't use the ribbed tru-rip type cable much US gear is supplied with; it needs to be insulated and sheathed cable.

Im also still not 100% clear on if 0.5mm mains cable is allowable on appliances here. I was told 0.75mm minimum in the past, but have seen things at legit retailers with 0.5mm on them.

There are clear plugs at bunnings from the deta range, just be aware that I think the metal they use for the badly fitting screws in them seems to have a large component of cheese or similar. They are the worst I have ever come across.

Are you sure you should be doing something as complicated as wiring a plug?

There is nothing in AS/NZS 3760:2010 that mandates the use of clear backed plugs and extension sets. It is mentioned that they make the process of verifying polarity and cord grip effectiveness easier but that is it. If you are getting items failed, or restricted from worksites, because of this issue then you either need to engage the services of another testing agency or stand your ground with the H&S dictator.

It is an insult to qualified electricians that anyone can perform testing to AS/NZS 3760:2010 as long as they meet the definition of "competent person" as per clause 1.4.4.

I could easily see them charging extra if they had to open up every plug.

Testing to AS/NZS 3760:2010 is generally completely noninvasive - there is no need to open anything unless faults are found and you choose to go looking for a source.

Section 2.3:

Confirmation of the correct polarity of live connections in cord sets with rewireable plugs or rewireable connectors.

NOTE –
(1) Clear backed plugs and cord extension sockets facilitate the easy inspection of the effectiveness of the sheath grip and polarity checking.

'Confirmation of the correct polarity' could be argued to mean simply checking phase to phase etc, but the mention of clear backed plugs IMHO strongly implies that they expect it to be visually checked, e.g. to ensure that it isn't miswired in the same way at both ends, which testing wouldn't find.

Any place that does electrical hardware will have them, Mitre10, Bunnings, The Warehouse, I've seen them at all of those. The proper hardware stores (M10 etc) typically have several different types that you can choose from.
