I would like to put carpet on my garage floor (double 5.6 x 5.5 m with a laundry nook.)

The floor has been epoxy painted but the paint has come away where the tyres rest.

I am currently looking at quotes from

1 Carpet plus $1340 (another $440 for grinding down the current epoxy surface)

2. Garage Carpet Pro - quote only after a site visit to scope out work required

3 Affordable Garage Carpet ($999)

Please advise if anyone has done this in the CHCH area and also any pitfalls to avoid.

Check out Roses Carpets in St Asaph Street. I am unsure if they stock carpet suitable for garages but I do know they stock a pretty huge variety of carpets at very competitive prices. I have done several renovations over the years (and my parents before me) and in my experience they can't be beaten on price. Great service and advice too from a family run business.

They don't have their own in-house installers, however they have a list of a dozen or so experienced independent carpet layers in Christchurch whom they recommend.

You select and buy the carpet, choose an installer/installers to give you quotes to lay, your chosen installer will pick the carpet up from Roses and bring it to your house for installation. Easy!

Moving house and hope all goes well with my Spark connection. 2 years ago you helped

Interested to hear what you end up with and how much it costs / the process for installation. Considering carpet or paint at the moment (we have bare concrete).

Paint is good. My garage floor is painted. Easy to sweep clean, or mop up water that drips off the car (or just leave it). Can't imagine trying to do that with carpet.

Paint is good. My garage floor is painted. Easy to sweep clean, or mop up water that drips off the car (or just leave it). Can't imagine trying to do that with carpet.

Ah, no, sorry. It was like that when I bought the house. I don't know what paint was used, but I'm very happy with it.

This is roughly the cost of putting down new carpet. I am still undecided.

Thanks that is useful to me. I would get painted epoxy over carpet no question (having never had either before!).

You are lucky that its bare concrete.

The advise is that you need about 48 hours for the epoxy to cure before you can store your stuff or floor standing shelves and drive and park your vehicle in after about a week

If you want to do the DIY way you can buy these paints from the likes of Resene. The concrete guy said he prefers to use SIKA brand products.

I am getting more inclined to epoxy paint than carpet as its easier to clean and also leaves marks where the tyres rest over a period of time (from a user's perspective)

One of the carpet layers says that there is no need to grind as the adhesive that they use binds well to the existing paint - I take this with a pinch of salt.

I know carpet for garaging seems to be becoming more popular these days (or at least more advertised), but you must consider that it's almost impossible to sweep leaves off of carpet. It is inevitable that leaves and other debris will blow into the garage whenever you have the garage door open. Do you really want to have to vacuum your garage regularly? As well as having to deal with permanent oil stains?

At least an epoxy paint coated garage will be easy to sweep (or even hose) out, and oil drips from vehicles can be cleaned up instantly with a rag.
