I'm sure this how been around a while, but I just discovered it myself yesterday.

I knew their was a 3D feature of Google maps, works for all (???) of New Zealand, but Christchurch's is amazing!

Use "ctrl" plus mouse to move, and scroll wheel to zoom

Here's a screen show of Christchurch hospital.

A great way to visualize empty lot topography for building: steep up hill, flat-ish, ...

1) Click "Satellite" button
2) Click "3d" button

Depends if they have a 3D of the area - Wellington CBD hasn't been done, so it's just a 2D photo bent over a topo map.

If you've got an Apple device, try the maps app as well - it has 3D for areas that Google doesn't and the 3D seems to render better often. Pity the UI/controls are clunky and counter-intuitive.
