I can't see a forum appropriate for power companies, so I'll post there here.

I've been a Powershop customer for over 10 years.

But....on August 14th they sent me an email saying they had moved me to a "Get Shifty" plan with peak prices and off-peak prices. They gave examples. 14c / kWh off-peak and 26c / kWh peak.

I didn't read the email for a a week or so.....but saw another email talking about Get Shifty, so I emailed them asking what it was. They replied and said I was already on Get Shifty.

Oh?

I went back and reviewed my Powershop filter folder.....and saw the email saying they had moved me to this plan, but I could click an opt out button in the email if I didn't want to stay on it.

Really? Opting people in without asking or consent?

I checked the rate on my account...and today's rates on that day were 17c/kWh off-peak and 29c/kWh peak.

I've NEVER paid 29c kWh and the 17c was about 1 cent / kWh lower than my previous average on Powershop. So this was going to end up being a LOT more expensive for me.

I called Powershop and told them I wasn't impressed and saw this as bad business practice and disrespectful of me, the customer, to do this without asking me.

Anyway.....after talking to Consumer and others I checked out other power providers and switched to Meridian, who will charge me 16c / kWh 24/7.

So thanks, Powershop, in a way as I'll now be paying less for power than I was before.....just not from you.

What daily rate are you paying to get power for 16c kWh? That's an incredibly cheap price.

Just from trawling Powerswitch, it is one of the Meridian Super Saver variants.

$1.80 per day. Unit rate is cheap as there isn't a promp payment discount. (Which I like)

Interesting @linuxluver. I got an "opt in" email from PowerShop about the same thing.

If I signed up via the link there and then, they'd put me on the new plan and send me the rates - otherwise if I wanted to know the rates I had to phone them - that required work from me so I haven't bothered.

I'm with meridian too, on their "the really simple pack". I think OP is Auckland based like me.

Fixed rate economy 24: 15.53c /kWh
EA levy: 0.19c/kWh
Daily rate $1.18785

(I signed up just under year or so, and I think they move around rates for new signers, so this is probiably the same plan).

Was on flick before that, but after a series of price spikes I couldn't respond to )very pregnant wife needed air-con on hot summer nights), I decided that being exposed to the wholesale market wasn't so fun. Being on a fixed price means one thing less to worry about...

More specifically it is the "Auckland Super Saver" plan.

https://www.meridianenergy.co.nz/your-home/terms-and-conditions

This offer is only available for new Meridian customers with a new residential connection in the Vector Auckland and Northern networks and excludes embedded networks.

That is a very good price at 16c but I found that Energy Club will be cheaper for me in Wellington so I'm switching from Flick.

Yes.

But different people running it, making different decisions and clearly different pricing.

Ownership can be very relevant, but wasn't in this case as far as I could tell.

Powershop was $1.93 / day incl GST.

Meridian is $1.85 / day incl GST.

I suspect I'm a high peak user and they wanted me to pay more.....or leave. My annual usage is about 27,500kWh. (Three women who are always cold, heaters going everywhere, dogs have to be able to go in and out. The whole situation is wildly out of control powerwise). My annual power spend has been just under $7,000.

Your power usage is way, way, above average. As the average usage in Auckland (last time I checked) is around 7200 KWh per year.

As for Powershop, Maybe they were tending to attract customers who like to actively manage their power usage. But who also have high peak demand. With Flick Electric and Electric Kiwi attracting customers who have high off peak demand. Meaning that Powershop would be making losses supplying the peak demand. While not selling enough higher margin offpeak power to make up the losses.

Or Powershop might just want to offer something other than a fixed price plan. As a way of competing against Flick Electric and Electric Kiwi.

was with powershop for 3 years and noticed they kept pushing the price up from what market leading prices to middle of the road to the final straw which made me shift to flick.
